Dave was born and raised in Iowa City, IA on Gilbert Street in the family apartment attached then as now to John's Grocery, an Iowa City landmark, which is owned and operated by his first cousin, John Alberhasky and family. A gifted and versatile athlete at Iowa City High School, Dave was named first team all-state in basketball, second team all-state in football, and was a state champion in tennis. He was elected a charter member of the Iowa City High School Hall of Fame and was inducted into the Iowa High School Hall of Fame. Dave's athletic career continued at the University of Iowa where, as a basketball player, he was named First Team All-Big Ten, and Second Team Sporting News All-American during the 1943-44 season. Dave was recognized as one of the top 100 basketball players in Iowa history and was one of five players named to the Iowa All-Decade Team of the 1940s. Dave wore No. 10 both in high school and college. Dave's record of service to the University of Iowa is extensive. In 1971 he was elected to the UI Foundation Board of Directors, serving as Executive Committee member and as Vice-President from 1974 to 1980. In 1980, he received the distinction of Lifetime Honorary Director and remained an active Board member. Dave was a generous contributor to the University of Iowa Athletic Department and Graduate College where a conference room is named in his honor. In 1973, Dave established the Herbert P. Cormack Scholarship in honor of his former football coach and Athletic Director at Iowa City High School. This scholarship has been awarded annually to a senior student at Iowa City High School who exhibits academic promise and who plans to attend the University of Iowa. It was in Iowa City at the Newman Club that Dave met and later married Dorothy Linnan of Laurens, Iowa with whom he enjoyed 60 years of marriage. Attendance at the University of Iowa became a family tradition for all four of the Danner children. Linnan family reunions at Lake Okoboji begun 39 years ago were another tradition that Dave enjoyed. Dave had a highly successful career in sales and retired in 1991 as Senior Vice-President of Sales for Griffith Laboratories, USA. Following his retirement, he became a member of the Board of Directors of the Friends of Ronald McDonald House Charities. Dave and Dorothy enjoyed winters in Maui, Hawaii, a favorite tennis spot for Dave, who played competitively into his 80s and was known to keep components off balance with his ambidexterity. He is survived by his wife Dorothy, nee Linnan, sons Mark (Mary), Michael (Margaret), David (Lois); daughter Peggy Miller; grandchildren Michael, Megan, Allie, Bridget, Melissa, Alec, Kevin, Christopher; sister Marilyn Irish. A memorial mass will be celebrated Friday, October 10, 2008 at 10 am, at St. Francis Xavier Church in La Grange, IL.
