A. E. Carroll, 45, an itinerant armhand, was patrolling the busiess district and threatening pedestrians with an automatic shotgun vhen Police Chief Dave Markham, 68 and Traffic Officer Orrin Soeth, 30, sought to disarm him. Within a space of seconds 15 shots had been fired by the three at a distance of six paces, and Markharn lay dying, his left side and arm torn by shot; Soeth dropped with the side of his face shot away, and Carroll, his shotgun emptied of its six charges, collapsed with bullet wounds in the side and back. BYSTANDER SHOT Fifty yards down the street, Henry McCracken Jr., 25, dashed from a hardware store to see what the shooting was about. A bullet from Markham's pistol struck him in the leg and severed an artery. Physicians said he had lost much blood and feared gangrene might set in. Carroll and Soeth were gven even chances of recovery at the Glenn County Hospital. When lynch talk began to circuate, authorities ordered Carroll removed to the City Jail and placed a guard around it for his safety. The muttered threats, however seemed predicated on the death of Soeth as well as Markham. "I've lived here 35 years and this is the first time I've heard talk of lynching," a reputable businessman told the United Press. Carroll, it was learned, drifted back into Willows on Friday after an absence of several weeks. He lived with Ben Osborn, a friend who worked at a feed mill. Osborn, former brother-in-law of the wounded McCracken, said Carroll had been "acting peculiar" for several days. 'ACTING PECULIAR' In Osborn's absence late yesterday Carroll apparently loaded Osborn's automatic shotgun and started down the main street, waving the weapon at pedestrians who scurried to cover. Answering the call of panic-stricken citizens, Chief Markham, in uniform, and Soeth, in plain clothes, found Carroll in front of the Hotel Barton. As they stepped, from their car, Carroll whirled and leveled his shotgun. A dozen words passed between them. Markham demanded Carroll surrender the gun. Soeth then fired a shot which struck Carroll in the side. In an instant Carroll was blazing away at both men, with the officers returning the fire until their guns were emptied and they fell. "I could have killed Carroll, but I didn't want to," Soeth murmured as he was taken to the hospital. Markham, a veteran of the Willows force, was married. Soeth has been a patrolman about six years. One of the witnesses to the street duel was Mrs. William Ford Higby, a visitor from San Francisco.
