The men were on their way to work and the accident occurred at 7 o’clock at Milnor Station three miles South of Greencastle. The men killed were Samuel Garver, Milford Fisher, Bud Scrader and David Beard, allof Greencastle. Three of the men were killed outright, and one died on the way to the Hagerstown hospital, where the injured men were taken. The bodies of the men killed were badly mangled. The injured are Frank Finafrock, John Snyder and Fred Onderhonk. When the freight train going north, struck the motor it was dragged on the track with the dead and injured men for two hundred feet to the south before it could be stopped. All of the men killed are married men with families. Among the sad features of the accident is that Samuel Garman had almost completed his term of service as a railroader and was about to be retired on a pension. Older residents of Greencastle declare the accident to be the worst one in their history. The section forcman was on his vacation and the crew was in charge of Fred Onderhonk who saw the approaching train and ordered the men to jump. It is supposed that the terrible fog that hung over this section early this morning obstructed the view of the oncoming train. Frank Finafrock, although seriously injured, had presence of mind to think of flagging train No.4 and managed to get to the signal station. An x-ray will be taken of his injuries this afternoon. It is supposed his hip is broken. Onderhonk, who was in charge of the section train telephoned before leaving to ascertain if the track was clear, and is said to have received an affirmative reply. Several officials of the Pennsylvania road visited the scene of the accident during the morning and a number of pictures were taken. Two of the injured men are in a serious condition and suffering from cuts and bruises and are more or less affected by the shock. Samuel Garman was a veteran railroader: He was aged 69 years, and has spent the greater portion of his life in the employ of the Pennsylvania. His home is on West Baltimore street. He is survived by his widow and five children; Mrs. O. L. Ingram and Mrs. William Bircher, both of Greencastle; Fank, Robert and Samuel Garman, at home. Mr. Garman’s body seemed to have been the one to receive the worst injuries from the collision. Nearly every bone was broken and crushed, his right arm was cut in two, he was cut to the bone below the waist, his jaw was broken, but his face uninjured. David Beard had his head almost cut in two. The wound extended from the top of the forehead down the middle of his nose. His jaw was broken and his brains were torn from his head, and many of the bones of his body crushed or broken. Mr. Beard’s home was on North Carlisle street. He has been a resident of Greencastle for many years and an employe of the railroad since his residence in Greencastle. He is survived by his widow and six children: Mrs. John Hoover, Mrs. Lottie Bitner, Mrs. Charles Myers, all of Greencastle; Annie, Claude and Howard at home. A strange coincidence in the case of Mr. Beard is that he is the fourth member of his connection to meet a violent death. George Beard was killed in a saw mill near Milnor; Charles Beard was run down by a freight train in Greencastle shortly after he had enlisted in the army. He went to say goodbye to some of his friends and in hurrying across the track to meet his train he ran in front of a freight and was rundown. Another member of the family also met a violent death, making four in the connection to suffer death by violence in the last few years. Shrader Leaves Family Bud Shrader was badly mangled, but the injuries about his body were not as bad as those, of Garman and Beard. He was aged about 50 years and is survived by his widow and four children, three at home; and Mrs. Ida Myers, of town. His home is on South Washington street. Milford Fisher was a son od Benjamin Fisher. He formerly resided with his father on the McLanahan farm near Greencastle, but he removed with his father to town and occupies the former Crunkleton property on East Madison street. He is survived by his widow and one child and his parents. Mr. Fisher was injured internally and his death occurred on the way to the Hagerstown hospital. The bodies have been brought to town and taken to their respective homes. Of the three injured men, John D. Snyder, of Kauffmans, and Frank Finafrock, East Franklin street, are in the most serious condition, but their complete recovery is expected, Mr. Snyder had his left hand amputated. Fred Onderdonk is suffering from cuts and bruises and shock but his injuries are in no way serious. Town In Gloom The accident has cast a gloom over Greencastle. Never in the history of the town has there been such a calamity. Residents of the town spent the day in discussing the tragedy, and during yhe morning hours business was nearly at a standstill. The baseball game scheduled for this afternoon was abandoned in respect of the many stricken families. The men who were killed have large connections which make the tragedy even more poignantly in many homes in Greencastle, but even in those homes where they were not with or kin, there is great sorrow for those who have been so deeply stricken. No arrangements for the funerals of the unfortunate victims have as yet been made as their survivers have been so appalled by the tragedy, that they are not in a fit condition to make any plans. The only .explanation of the accident seems to be the denseness of the fog, as the men have been making the same trip, going to work every morning for several days at the same time.
