One of the successful self-made men of Marshall county whose efforts and influence have contributed to the material upbuilding and general business activity of their respective communities is David Catlow, who, after a long life of strenuous endeavor, is now living practically retired in his cozy home in the town of Albion, and is well worthy of specific mention. While not being among the first settlers of the county, he has, nevertheless, lived through its period of development, for it has been nearly a half century since he cast his lot among us. Being ambitious from the first, but surrounded by none too favorable environment, his early youth was not especially promising, but he resolutely set his face and gradually surmounted the difﬁculties in his way and success has attended his efforts; besides, what is of more importance, he has led a life so consistent with the right that he has ever enjoyed the confidence of his fellow men. Mr. Catlow was born in Huntingdon county, Pennsylvania, October 11, 1830, the son of Richard and Mary (Crowell) Catlow, the father a native of Yorkshire, England, and the mother of Maryland. The father was a farmer and a minister. He came to America in an early day, but he was eighty-four years old when he came to Pennsylvania, locating in Unionville, Center county. The mother died in that state when eighty years of age. The elder Catlow was a devout Christian and a good and useful man, intelligent and well informed. His family consisted of ten children, only two of whom are now living, David, of this review, and Mrs. Sarah Teets, of Syracuse, New York. David Catlow came west in 1856 and located in Stephenson county, Illinois, where he remained until the fall of 1864, when he came to Iowa, locating in Marietta township, Marshall county, and he has lived in the county ever since and has been successful in a business way here. He moved to his present home in Albion in 1898. Mr. Catlow was married on May 24, 1855, in Center county, Pennsylvania, to Mary Smith, who was born in Center county, that state, the daughter of John A. and Elizabeth (Brown) Smith, both natives of that county also. To Mr. and Mrs. Catlow twelve children have been born, two of whom are deceased. They were named as follows: Sylvanius R., Isabella, Rhoda, Sylvester, Sylvaria, Jessie, Ida, Ada, James (deceased), Roy, William (deceased), and Amy. There are fifteen grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
