DEATH BY A FALL OF SLATE Excellent young man of Avery is killed in the Smoky Hollow Mines. The mining industry of Monroe county claimed another victim last Friday afternoon in the person of Henry (Dave) Meadows, of Avery, who had employment in the mines of the Smoky Hollow Company at Hines. Mr. Meadows was but twenty-three years of age and had been mining ever since he was able to handle a shovel of coal. He had been working in room twenty-eight in the Hynes mines at Mine No.6 and had turned the room where he met his death. The room had always been rather a bad one and Mr. Meadows contemplated asking for a change. Friday morning he set the timbers he thought were necessary and just after dinner he began loading out the coal. He was working close to the face of the coal when a piece of slate slipped and fell. The piece was three feet long, four feet wide and twelve inches thick. He was stooping over at the time the fall came and his head was crushed to the floor of the mine and his neck broken. There were others working in a nearby room and when they heard the crash they went to his assistance. When the coal was removed from the body life had passed. Coroner Hyatt went to Avery and held an inquest at the home of the man where the body had been taken. The result of the inquest was that death was accidental and there was no blame that could be attached in any way to the company. Those who were acquainted with Mr. Meadows state he was one of the best timber men employed in the mine and a citizen of worth and character.
