Kruse was born on August 4, 1948, in Brookings, South Dakota the son of Donald and Vada (Swedlund) Kruse. He died on December 25th, 2004 from an automobile accident at the age of 56. David grew up in Brookings where he attended the Brookings Schools. He was united in marriage to Wanda D. Smith in 1968 in Brookings. They were happily married for 33 years…until the loss of Wanda to cancer in 2001. Together they had 5 children; Missy, Sarah, Dawn, Donnie, and Scott. During those years he was employed by Coast to Coast trucking for many years along with various jobs until his union with Sheila Elston. On November 2nd, 2002, David and Sheila were united in marriage 2000 ft. above Sioux Falls in a hot air balloon. David wanted to be as close to the people in heaven as those on earth. Sheila was David's angel in disguise and gave him hope for the future… a true blessing. They were both employed by Howalt-McDowell and he often expressed how much he enjoyed his work ‘family' and joked about his self-title as "Maintenance Engineer". David was an avid sportsman and has always enjoyed spending his free time shooting geese and casting for walleye. This past year he has been able to fulfill his dreams of traveling to Canada to fish for walleye and hunt for trophy caribou. He has also expressed how much he enjoyed his Saturday trips to the VFW where he danced with Sheila along side his mother Vada and his stepfather Darrell. David was a kind and loving man with a very large heart. Those that know him well know that he was famous for his storytelling and story stretching; a man with a quick wit and many catch phrases. And as David always said "Glad you got to see me!" David is survived by his wife Sheila, of Sioux Falls; three daughters, Missy Anderson (Matt) of Volga, Sarah Stoltenberg (Aaron) of Volga, Dawn Joffer (Jeremy) of Volga; one son, Donnie Kruse of Dallas, Texas; one step-daughter Stacey DeVaney (Jeff) of Aberdeen; one step-son, Danny Elston Jr. (Linda) of Sioux Falls; ten granddaughters, Tessa, Jaiden, Montana, Hannah, Macy, Maquenzie, Amber, Rebecca, Aleasha, and Samantha; five grandsons, Ethan, Brennan, Dillon, Hunter, and Deven; his mother, Vada Iverson (Darrell) of Brookings; three brothers, Dennis Kruse (Nettie) of Brookings, Danny Kruse (Julie) of Brookings and Dwight Kruse (Marilyn) of Lake Preston, SD; two sisters, Deb Stewart (Dave) of Brookings and Sue Weinberg (Ken) of Lake Poinsett. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Wanda; his youngest son, Scott, who died on July 2, 1996 and his father, Don Kruse.
