A fatal accident by which Ed Lighty of Turkey Grove lost his life occurred last evening about seven o'clock. Mr. Lighty, who lives with his widowed sister, Mrs. Elsie Judd, had been away during the day helping a neighbor gather corn. He started to drive home shortly after six o'clock in the evening and when passing the Hiatt place the team is supposed to have shied at a derrick on the place which had been erected to drill a well. A guide wire from the top of the derrick had been stretched across the road and fastened so that when the team shied to that side of the road the wagon struck the wire and pulled the derrick over. As it fell an iron bar on it struck Lighty on the head crushing the skull and making a ghastly wound. The frightened team pulled the wagon from under the derrick and went on home about a quarter of a mile distant, with Lighty in the wagon, unconscious. His sister, Mrs. Judd, heard the team coming and went out with a lantern to meet her brother but as the team did not stop at the usually place she followed and called to him. Receiving no answer she hurried on overtaking and stopping it. Climbing into the wagon she discovered the unconscious form of her brother covered with blood from the wound. Her aged mother lives with her, but without apprising the old lady of her awful discover she went to a neighbor's, Mr. Bruce Lewis, who summoned Dr. Graham of this city. He dressed the wound but Mr. Lighty only lived about an hour. Mr. Lighty was a widower about 42 years of age, his wife having died six years ago. He leaves to mourn his loss a son six years of age, his mother, and his sister, Mrs. Judd, with whom he lived, and two broths. L. Lighty of Casey and I. Lighty of Harlan. The brother from Harlan, who had been notified by phone, arrived this morning. Funeral services will be held at the home Sunday morning at 10:30 o'clock and interment made in the Wiota Cemetery. An inquest was held this morning and the jury returned the following verdict: "We, the jury, find that deceased came to his death by being struck by a falling derrick, criminally and carelessly left in the highway." (A. Gravely, C. G. Nordman, William Judd). As a result of the verdict, H. L. Sampson, a well digger and Albert Walters, both of Lewis, and G. W. Hiatt of Franklin Township were arrested, being charged with criminally and carelessly obstructing a public highway. They were arraigned before Justice Pressnall and their bonds were fixed at $500 in each instance. The preliminary hearing will be held November 27th.
