"David Earl Boatwright was born on a Wednesday in the back of his parents general store in Ariel Crossroads, South Carolina. David started playing the piano about 1943, when a second hand one was bought to teach his older brother Stanley. He played his first songs in public on several occasions at the YMCA in San Francisco in June 1944 and was playing on a local weekly radio talent show by age 6. David attended Myrtle Beach High and was captain of the band, editor of the high school newspaper and a member of the National Beta Club. He received a scholarship to Flora McDonald Conservatory of Music as well as an Elks Scholarship from Myrtle Beach High. He married Tota and they were the parents of one son and three daughters. After serving in the air force band, and working for Mutual Finance Corp., they moved to Iceland in 1965 where David worked for Icelandic Airlines. David played the organ in the churches in Iceland where his father-in-law was a Lutheran minister. He converted to Catholicism while Tota remained Lutheran." Excerpted from page 52, Basses and Boatwrights, written by David Earl Boatwright MYRTLE BEACH - David Earl Dismas Boatwright passed away peacefully surrounded by his family after a long illness on November 23, 2013. He was born at Ariel Crossroads in Rains, SC and grew up in Brittons Neck, SC. David graduated from Myrtle Beach High School in 1957. He attended Flora Macdonald Conservatory of Music in Red Springs, NC. He was a member of the USAF Band while stationed in Keflavik, Iceland where he met his wife, Thorunn. After his military experience he worked for the JC Penney for 32 years working his way up to the corporate headquarters and managing his own store. Throughout his life he played the organ for churches in Iceland and the USA. After retiring, he played for St. Edwards Catholic Church in Stafford Springs, CT and later for St. James Catholic Church in Conway, SC. He was predeceased by his wife Thorunn (Tota) Boatwright: mother and father, Virginia Bass Boatwright and Percy L. Boatwright. He is survived by his four children, Helen (Brad), Jonina (Jon), Sigrun (Halldor) and David Johann (Lenna); his grandchildren, Zachary, Connor, Dillon, Lucas, Erynn, Owen and Daniel; brother Carroll Stanley Boatwright; three sisters Linda Boatwright Johnson, Vikki Boatwright Cox and Deana Boatwright Brown. David's hobby was his family genealogy and he wrote a book detailing his family history dating back to the 1600s. He was a talented musician, loving father and brother who befriended everyone he met. The funeral will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, November 30th at the Catholic Church of St. James in Conway. Internment will take place at 2:00 p.m. at Old Neck Cemetery in Brittons Neck.
