| Description | : | U.S. Congressman. A native of Pennsylvania, his family moved to Clermont County, Ohio when he was a young boy. He apprenticed as a printer and worked for a local newspaper. He was elected to the Ohio Legislature and unsuccessfully ran for Governor in 1844. He became the editor of the "Republican", a Whig party newspaper in Clinton County, Ohio. He was then elected as a Whig to represent Ohio's 2nd District in the United States House of Representatives, he served from 1847 to 1849.
