Description	:	In early 1872 Franklin Freer and his brother David, along with Sam Miller were heading north along the Columbia towards Canada. They had done very well with their Walla Walla-based freighting business which operated pack trains between Wallula on the Columbia and Idaho gold fields and later into Montana. Wagons and roads eventually supplanted the pack mule on these routes and the partners came north looking for new opportunity. They had done very well with their Walla Walla-based freighting business which operated pack trains between Wallula on the Columbia and Idaho gold fields and later into Montana. Wagons and roads eventually supplanted the pack mule on these routes and the partners came north looking for new opportunity. They came upon a trading company operated by Ingram and McBride at the confluence of the Wenatchee and Columbia rivers. According to a later account, Ingram and McBride had been trading mostly in liquor and mostly with Indians, something that had gotten the attention of the army and the Kittitas County sheriff. The story suggests they were anxious to sell though Sam Miller's ledgers, begun in the summer of 1872, show that Ingram and McBride were still in the valley until the following year. Ingram, McBride, the Freer brothers and Sam Miller were the only white men in the region at this time and after the earthquake of 1872 and the transfer of the business to the Freer brothers and Sam Miller, some log buildings were added to the property and the trading post became a bustle of activity known as Millersburgh to the people passing through, to the miners who worked the banks of the Columbia and Wenatchee rivers and to the trickle of homesteaders finding their way to the valley.
