Pleasant. He had been in failing health for some time, owing to the infirmities of old age. He was born in Illinois in 1825, and came to this section of Iowa at a very early age. He located on a farm northwest of the county seat, where he resided for a great number of years. He carried on a general blacksmithing business in connection with his farming, and was well known for his expert work in iron and other metals. He was a kind and neighborly man much in demand in times of sickness. He was every ready to go in answer to the call of distress and many were nursed through dangerous illness by him. He loved little children, and they, in return, loved him. He was a man with a fine fund of humor, which endeared him to many who were helped along life's rugged pathway by his cheerfulness. He loved the spot where he had lived for so many years, and it was with regret that he left it to go to the home of his daughter, where he tarried only about two weeks before his demise. He was married to Miss Mary Cornelia Allender. Their union was blessed with nine children, five sons and four daughters. Those deceased are Wesley, Thomas, Fred, Samuel, Laura and Emmeline; the living are, Mr. George Gholson, Mt. Pleasant; Mrs. Fannie Klopfenstein, Mt. Pleasant; and Mrs. William Carnes, Akron, Colorado. A large number of grandchildren and other relatives also remain. They have the sympathy of many friends. Funeral services were held in the Oak Grove Church, conducted by Frank E. Weston, pastor of the First Baptist Church, Mt. Pleasant, on Monday forenoon at eleven o'clock. The house was crowded with old friends and neighbors. The formal tributes were beautiful and expressive. A choir, consisting of Miss Electa Allender, organist, and Mr. and Mrs. E. E. Myers, Miss Nina Egli, and Messrs. James Smith, Herman Egli and John Ingwerson, sang favorite hymns. The pallbearers were George Fickel, Joseph, and Omar Gholson, Joseph Klopfenstein, Mark Brewster and James Smith. The text was 1 Cor. 15:22:26. After the services, the remains were laid to rest in the cemetery adjoining the church, among loved ones who had passed on before. Mount Pleasant Daily News, May 6, 1914
