David Gordon was born in Cullabackey, County Antrim, Ireland, March 3, 1850, and was the second son of Thomas and Mary Kerr Gordon. He left his native land in 1871, arriving at Eldridge, Iowa, July 5, that year, and at once entered the employ of the Davenport and Northwestern railroad, now a part of the Milwaukee system, being promoted to engineer in March, 1880, and remained in active service up until the time of his death, having on July 5, 1923, completed fifty-two years of continuous service. He was united in marriage in 1886 to Sarah N. Dearborn of Stone City, Iowa, who preceded him in death, and for the past few years he has made his home with his son, G.D. Gordon. For a number of years it has been his custom to spend his vacation at the home of his daughter in Victoria, Texas, and it was while at her home on a visit that he was stricken with pneumonia, becoming ill the day following his arrival there. As soon as news of his illness was received his son, Gerald, and wife, left for Victoria, reaching there December 14, and were with him until the end, which came at 3:00 p.m., December 16, making him 73 years, 9 months and 13 days of age. Mr. Gordon was a charter member of Trojan lodge No. 548, A.F. and A.M., a member of Marion Chapter No. 10, R.A.M., Patmos Commandry No. 26, Knights Templar and El Kahir Temple of the Mystic Shrine, also of Division No. 200, Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers. The remains were brought to Marion and funeral services were conducted from the Masonic temple by Trojan lodge, assisted by Rev. Harry Glenn Finney, interment being made in Oak Shade cemetery. Surviving are three sons, Gerald and Frankland of Marion, Henry of Chicago, and one daughter, Mrs. Mayetta Jecker of Victoria, Texas, his elder brother, Thomas of Bridgewater, Iowa, and Smith Gordon, who is a resident at the old homestead in Cullabackey, and ten grandchildren.
