Having lost nearly all his property in the panic of 1837, David GOUGHNOUR, sr., a sturdy mechanic, with wife and eight children, four boys and four girls, concluded to go to the great west to try his fortune. Taking a canal boat at Johnstown, which at that early date was the only way of public travel except by stage coach, they arrived at Pittsburgh, boarded a steamboat named Walnut Hills, which carried them down the Ohio River to its confluence with the Mississippi and up that stream to their destination. In those days racing on that river was an exciting feature of a trip, and often attended with serious results. Soon after leaving Cairo and starting up the Mississippi a small steamer came out of a port on the west side of the river, heading directly for our craft and in the same direction, and it was given out on our boat that a race was on. This fact was soon made apparent to all on board from the increased speed and the wonderful exertions of the firemen in feeding those old boilers, not only with the ordinary fuel then used but by throwing hundreds of pounds of bacon to increase the heat in the furnaces. All was excitement. The old boat quivered and shook like a leaf in a windstorm, to such an extent that the passengers became alarmed for fear of an accident. After about two hours of this excitement our boat gained very materially on the other, and, either giving up the chase or for some other reason, it struck for a landing nearby, and all on our boat were very thankful that the race was at an end with nothing more serious than a big scare. The family arrived safely at Burlington on April 28th, 1844, stopped for a short time near that place and then moved to Libertyville, Jefferson County, where all lived for many years, some still being residents of this county. After arriving at Libertyville the father and mother took stock of their worldly possessions, which consisted of one hundred dollars in silver and a few household goods, among which was an old style loom that later was a means of very materially assisting the family in making a living. The father soon bought forty acres of raw prairie land near this village, built a small house and improved as circumstances would admit. The family moved to its new home and began life anew. Times were hard, money scarce, and little work to be had at any wages, but the father got such as could be had and the mother used the old loom in making such cloth as was used in those days. The girls worked out. The older boys, eleven and thirteen years of age, hired out to shuck corn at 15 cents per day, payable not in money but in corn. This low wage, however, was in part compensated for by the fact that corn was only worth 5 cents per bushel, thus giving the boys three bushels per day, and I assure you (for I was one of them) that they thought they had struck it big. And so in fact it was in some respects, as corn helped materially in supplying their wants as food, as well as to feed the crumply horned cow, on which the family depended for milk. So from year to year they all bent their best energies in trying to get on in the world. A daughter died in 1847, a son in 1851, and the father in 1850 and the mother in 1873. Six children remain and on September 21st of the present year they met with one of the sisters in Polk County in a family reunion, and I doubt if a more pleasant meeting was ever had by any family in this state or any other. The combined ages of the six survivors is 423 years, much more, I judge, than is generally allotted to one family of that number, proving the value of correct living, industry and sobriety. None make any pretensions to great riches, but all are independent and well to do, and have no fears of being subjected to the cold charity of the world in their declining years. Many strange and interesting incidents could be related about the hardships and privations of some of the survivors, but as this article is not intended for any such purpose, I close by saying that the above family is that of David GOUGHNOUR, sr., of Johnstown, Pa., who settled in Jefferson County, Iowa, in 1844. END ------- The following is about David Goughnour, whose memorial this is for: ------- History of Jefferson County, Iowa -- A Record of Settlement, Organization, Progress and Achievement, Vol II, Published 1912, S. J. Clarke Publishing Co., Chicago, Pages 110, 113 and 114 David GOUGHNOUR. The late David GOUGHNOUR, for many years successfully identified with the agricultural intrests of Jefferson county where he was numbered among the highly esteem citizens, was born in Cambia county, Pennsylvania, on the 30th of July, 1836. His parents were David and Mary (FOX) GOUGHNOUR, natives of Pennsylvania, the father of Dutch extraction and the mother of Irish. They came to Iowa with their parents when children, being reared to maturity near Libertyville, Jefferson county, where they were later married. There the father followed the trade of millwright until 1849 when he joined the goldseekers and went to California. After spending three years in prospecting he started homeward, but contracted cholera while enroute and passed away at Memphis, Tennessee. His wife then removed to Polk county, this state, where she resided thereafter, her death occurring at Elkhart in 1872. The early years in the life of David GOUGHNOUR were not unlike those of the majority of lads reared in the country at that period. In pursuit of an education he attended the district schools until he had mastered the common branches, during which time his energies were also devoted to the work of the fields. After his marriage he went to Dallas county, Iowa, where for two years he operated a mill for his brother Manuel. At the expiration of that time he decided to return to farming and purchased fifty-seven acres of land in Polk county. Cultivating his farm for six years he disposed of it and acquired some prairie land upon which he resided for a similar period. Selling this property he located near Altoona, where he lived for nine years, when he returned to Jefferson county, settling on a farm southeast of Batavia in Des Moines township. He successfully engaged in the operation of this place for fourteen years, but owing to the state of his health in 1905 was forced to withdraw from active farming and moved to Batavia. There he continued to reside until his death on the 19th of December, 1908. He is survived by his widow who still makes her home in Batavla. Ever loyal and public-spirited, when the call came from troops, in 1864, Mr. GOUGHNOUR responded, enlisting at Davenport, and going to the front with Company F, Third Iowa Volunteer Cavalry. He saw much active service, participating in many of the hard campaigns during the closing months of the war, having been for three months at one time in the saddle almost continuously, just snatching such rest as he could at rare intervals. After he was mustered out he returned to Jefferson county, where he resided until after his marriage. Mr. GOUGHNOUR married on the 14th of March, 1867, Miss Lovina HANEY. Mrs. GOUGHNOUR was born on a farm near Dayton, Montgomery county, Ohio, her parents being Daniel and Susan (RODABAUGH) HANEY, natives of Pennsylvania, of German extraction. Mr. and Mrs. HANEY removed with their parents during childhood to Ohio, where they were later married, continuing to be residents of the Buckeye state until 1855. In the latter year they came to Iowa, locating on a farm wst of Birmingham, Jefferson county, where they resided for six years. At the expiration of that period they removed to Whitfield and there he continued to follow agricultural pursuits until his death. The mother survived for six years thereafter, her demise occurring on the home farm. Eight children were born to the marriage of Mr. and Mrs. GOUGHNOUR. Daniel E., who is the marshal of Byron, Illinois, and also manager of the City Electric Light & Water Company, married Mary DILLON of Byron, and they have two children, Vinson and Dorothy. Sarah, the wife of William STEBLETON, a farmer of North Dakota, has seven children: Ethel, Cletis, Harvey, Hazel, Floyd, George and Leslie. Henry, who was the third in order of birth, died at the age of two years and six months. Mina, the wife of Charles SMITH, a farmer living three miles south of Batavia, has a son and a daughter, Russell and Mabel. Annie died at the age of nine years and ten months. Carrie, is the widow of William BOYSEL, a farmer who lived south of Batavia. Mary, who was the youngest daughter, died at the age of four years and four days. Wilson, who is the eighth member of the family, remains at home. An earnest Christian, Mr. GOUGHNOUR was always an active member of the Brethren church of Batavia, with which organization Mrs. GOUGHNOUR is also identified. Politically he was a republican, and served on the district school boards in both Polk and Jefferson counties. He was a man of energetic and forceful character whose influence was ever exerted in support of all that was best in forwarding the interests of the community in which he resided and in whose development he ever took an earnest and helpful part. -------- The following was entered by the original contributors of this memorial, Larry and Edie, and is retained on this memorial.
