Read More	COURTESY OF THE OTTUMWA COURIER David J. Fiedler died at 10:45 p.m. Dec. 29,1925 at the home of his son H. A. Fiedler, 312 Burrhus St. He was born Feb. 25. 1837 in Dauphin Co., PA. He was married June 11, 1865 to Mary E. Hastings. To this union were born six sons; Johnnie, Daniel and Milton all deceased, Surv. are; Ira B., Franklin E. and Henry A. He was a member of the United Brethren Church for many years. When he came to Ottumwa about ten years ago he united with the Finley Avenue Baptist Church and was a faithful member until the time of his death. The funeral services were held in that church Dec. 31. conducted by Rev. John Hastie. Interment was in Fiedler Cemetery. Mr. Fiedler was one of the oldest settlers of Wapello Co. coming to Iowa with his parents from Pennsylvania in 1838. At that time there were no railroads west of Pittsburgh, so they came down the Ohio River in a flatboat to Cairo, IL. There they loaded onto a steamboat and came up the Mississippi river to Keokuk where the father secured another flatboat, loaded up his family and poled it up the Des Moines river to a point then called Lexington, where they lived until the spring of 1843. The whites at that time were permitted to settle in Wapello Co. so Mr. Fiedler, then a lad came with his father to Wapello Co. May 1, 1843. The father staked out a claim in Keokuk township, six miles south of Agency, where they made their home. David Fiedler lived on this same farm until about ten years ago when he came to Ottumwa and made his home with his sons.
