David James Biba was born to James Albert Biba and Ruth Esther (Craft) Biba on March 4, 1954 in Hebron, Nebraska, and passed away September 19, 2008 at York General Hospital in York, Nebraska, at the age of 54 years. Dave lived most of his life in Nebraska, graduating from Geneva High School in 1972, and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1976. On March 5, 1977, he married Susan Hendrickson of Shickley, and they celebrated their 31st wedding anniversary earlier this year. The couple was blessed with two children: Catherine Marie Biba born in 1984, and Brandon David Biba in 1986. Beginning with summers during high school, Dave worked for his family's highway construction business on the road crew. After completing a degree in Construction Management, he worked alongside his parents and brothers for many years, until Jim Biba passed the reins to his children. During this time, Dave was an active member of the Association of General Contractors, becoming a lifetime director. He also served a term as president of the state chapter. Dave and his brother Gary ran the company until it was dissolved in 1998. After this, we partied like it was 1999, because it was. The dissolution of the company allowed Dave to devote more time to his family, and various community pursuits. He was an active member of the UCC Church, where he served as a trustee, and was a popular Sunday school teacher. When his son, Brandon, joined Boy Scouts, Dave became an Assistant Scoutmaster, often organizing and taking part in campouts, merit badge workshops, and pancake feeds. Dave's other civic commitments included organizing the Geneva 4th of July parade, Sons of the American Legion, the Rotary club, and 16 years on the Geneva and Fillmore Central School Board. One of Dave's most enduring hobbies was aviation, and it became his second career. After earning his pilot's license in 1973, he took every opportunity to fly, looking at job sites, taking family vacations, or simply enjoying beautiful days. He was an active member of the York Chapter of the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA). He made almost yearly trips to the "Mecca of Aviation," the Oshkosh Air Show with his wife Susan; his brother Gary; his son Brandon; good friend Frank Heinisch, and as many other people as he could bring along. He thoroughly enjoyed sharing his passion for flight with others, especially first-time fliers and children. Over 100 people took their inaugural airplane ride with Dave. After retiring from the construction business, he began studying to earn his certified flight instructo rating. He became a flight insttructor at York Municipal Airport in 2000. In addition to all of the community activities, and hobbies that Dave participated in, he always had time for the most important part of his life-his family. He was lucky to have the opportunity to travel to many different places. Dave never hesitated to take the entire family along, often turning business trips into family vacations. He always encouraged Cathi and Brandon to participate in as many activities as they enojoyed. While they were growning up, Dave played a myriad of roles, including youth sports equipment manager, speech fan, quiz-bowl driver, field trip chaperone, band parent, activity photographer, and sports fan. He was also supportive of his wife Susan, when she decided to go back to school, driving her to Lincoln several times a week, and wating for her while she attended class. He enthusiastically supported his kids throught their academic careers, proudly encouraging Cathi to pursue higher education, and helping her move across the country to attend graduated school at Cornell, just last month. He was also very proud of Brandon, who will graduated from the United States Air Force Academy next spring. Dave was active in the Air Force Academy's parents' club for Nebraska, and was currently serving as chapter president. Dave is survived by his wife, Susan; daughter Catherine; son Brandon and his fiancee' Brittni Roth; parents Jim and Ruth Biba; sisters Debra Biba, and husband Rob Everts; Linda and husband Todd Shumaker; brothers Gary and wife Margo; Gregg and partner, Paul Parks; mother-in-law, Joan Hendrickson; brothers-in-law, Bob Hendrickson; John Hendrickson, and wife Chris; sister-in-law Mary Hendrickson and husband, John Emery; nieces and nephews, Matt Lambert, Amanda Woodward, Lizzi, Jonah, and Annika Hendrickson, and Landon Sumaker. Funeral services were conducted from the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Geneva on September 24, with the Rev. Dr. Detlef Schwartz and the Rev. Curt Coddington officiating. Nancy Jo Galusha accompanied the congregation who sang "Amazing Grace." Special music selections were "Praise You in This Storm" and "I Can Only Imagine." Casket bearers were Matt Lambert, Roger Jacobsen, Dave Seggerman, Bob Kohler, Frank Heinisch and Jim Ashby. Interment was in the Geneva Public Cemetery. The Nebraska Signal October 1st, 2008 page 5.
