He grew up on the family farm and graduated from Orland High School in 1961. He earned a bachelor of arts degree in education from Augustana College and a master's degree in education from the University of South Dakota. He taught for 32 years in the West Central School District at Hartford. He married Betty Wilcox on Aug. 20, 1965, at Madison, and they lived in Sioux Falls. After his retirement, they returned to the Madison-Orland area and lived on an acreage. He was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church and had also served in the South Dakota Legislature for six years. Survivors include his wife, Betty of Madison; a son, Ernie of Madison; four sisters, Darlene Mader of Menno, Delores (Newt) Walter of Houston, Texas, Patricia Hansen of Salem, and Ernestine (Dennis) Price of Leuling, La. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son in infancy; and a brother, Dan in 1988. Memorials may be directed to Bethel Lutheran Nursing Home or the Huntington Disease Association.
