He was born December 13, 1953, at the Air Force Regional Hospital in Wiesbaden, Germany, the son of Charles Kendel and Anita Yvonne Thompson. He was born December 13, 1953, at the Air Force Regional Hospital in Wiesbaden, Germany, the son of Charles Kendel and Anita Yvonne Thompson. On April 17, 1981, in Norfolk, Virginia, he married Gail M. Runkle. Dave grew up in Ottumwa and resided in Olean, New York, since 1998. A U.S. Navy veteran of both Vietnam and the Gulf wars, he served for 26 years and retired as a master chief electronics technician and reactor operator on fast-attack submarines. At the time of his passing, he was employed as a foreman at Dresser-Rand Co. Surviving is his wife, Gail; two sons, Joshua D. (Chelsey) Thompson and Zachary M. Thompson, both of Olean, New York; a daughter Kaitlin E.Y. Thompson of Olean, New York; a daughter, Jennifer; a son, Robert (Claudia) and two grandchildren, Robert and Rachael, from a previous marriage; his father and his wife, Kendel and Genevieve Thompson of Ottumwa; two brothers, Ron (Janice) Thompson of Everly, Iowa, and Steve (Wendy) Thompson of Fremont, Nebraska; a sister, Penny Brockelsby of Des Moines; a sister-in-law, Mary Thompson of Ottumwa; and many relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his mother, Yvonne Thompson; a brother, Scott Thompson; a niece, Carrie Thompson; brother-in-law, Rich Brockelsby; grandparents and aunts and uncles. His body has been cremated. Graveside services and inurnment will be 11 a.m. Saturday, May 16, 2015, at the Floris Cemetery with Rev. Leila Disburg officiating. Military services will be conducted by Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars and O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials given to the Wounded Warrior Project, PO Box 75817, Topeka, Kansas 66675. Reece Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
