Known to his family as Lloyd, he was born near Denison, Iowa, on September 10, 1920, to Seth V,/. and Hattie M. (Macumber) Calderwood. He graduated from Arcadia High School in 1938, and entered the Civilian Conservation Corps, then the U.S. Maritime Service, Merchant Marine Operator,s School at Gallups Island near Boston. He traveled the world in the Merchant Marine from 1942 to 1945 as radio operator on the S. S. Marymar and S. S. Cape Comfort. He earned B.S. and M.S. degrees in agricultural engineering from Iowa State College (now Iowa State University) in 1949 and 1952, respectively. Lloyd spent most of his career with the U. S. Department of Agriculture in College Station, then Beaumont, Texas, where he conducted research on conditioning and storage of rice. Upon retirement in 1984, he traveled extensively throughout the world; held memberships in numerous organizations; actively supported the Iowa State University Alumni Association and played golf as much as possible. He was also devoted to his family. Lloyd was preceded in death by his parents; two siblings and their spouses, Wayne (Bonnie) Calderwood of Ames, and Ada (Robert) Phillips of Perry; brothers-in-law Robert Zednichek of Marshalltown and Robert Plendl of Hinton; a niece and a great-great nephew. He was survived by two sisters, Dorothy Zednichek, of Marshalltown, and Bethyl Plendl, of Hinton, Iowa; fifteen nieces and nephews; twenty-one great-nieces and nephews; and nineteen great-great nieces and nephews. A private graveside service will be held at Westside Cemetery on May 25, 2013. Memorials may be made to a charity of one,s choice. ∼David Lloyd Calderwood, known to many as Lloyd, was born on a farm near Denison, Iowa, on (Our web page would not take correct Death Date - November 3, 2012) September 10, 1920. He was the third of five children born to Seth W. and Hattie M. (Macumber) Calderwood. He graduated from Arcadia High School, Arcadia, Iowa in the Class of 1938. In July 1938, he enrolled in the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) and was sent to a CCC camp at Clarion, Iowa. Lloyd was selected to attend the U. S. Maritime Service Merchant Marine Radio Operator's School at Gallups Island in Boston Harbor and graduated in 1941. From 1942 through 1945, he served as radio operator for the S.S. Marymar, and later the S.S. Cape Comfort, visiting numerous countries in Europe, Africa, Asia and South America. He attended Iowa State College, now Iowa State University, from 1946 through 1952, graduating with bachelor's and master's degrees in Agricultural Engineering. In 1955 he began his career with the United States Department of Agriculture, at College Station, Texas, performing research on conditioning and storage of agricultural products principally rough rice. In 1962, he transferred to the Agricultural Research and Extension Center for Texas A & M University at Beaumont, Texas. He lived in Beaumont for the next fifty years. He retired in June 1984, and continued to travel throughout the world. During his long lifetime, Lloyd was an avid golfer, reader, photographer, game player and ham radio operator, among other pursuits. He was a member of numerous organizations, including the Gallups Island Radio Operators Association, National Association of Agricultural and Biological Engineers; the National Association of Retired Federal Employees (NARFE); and the Iowa State University Alumni Association. He was devoted to his family, to whom he was always special. After his move to Texas, he drove from his home in Beaumont twice each year, including his final year, to visit family members throughout Iowa, who happily awaited his safe arrival. Lloyd is survived by his two sisters, Dorothy Zednichek of Marshalltown, Iowa and Bethyl Plendl of Hinton, Iowa, as well as fifteen nieces and nephews; twenty-one great nieces and nephews; and nineteen great-great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, two siblings and their spouses: Wayne (Bonnie) Calderwood of Ames and Ada (Robert) Phillips of Perry: brothers-in-law Robert Zednichek and Robert Plendl of Hinton; a niece and a great-great nephew. Interment will be held on Saturday morning, May 25 at 11:00 a.m. in the Calderwood family plot at Westside Cemetery, Westside, Iowa.
