Death followed a year and a half of illness due to a paralytic stroke. D. L. Gillespie was born April 11, 1866 at Weston, Missouri. He and his two brothers, Albert C and William D, came west in the early 80'sand located near the site of the present town of Waterville. Albert Gillespie was a pioneer sheriff of Douglas county and D L Gillespie served as deputy. William went to Spokane and was one of the four policemen then on duty in that city. D. L. Gillespie was a pioneer of the Waterville country as only a few settlers were in that part of the Big Bend. On January 23, 1889 he was married to Esther E Fletcher, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Fletcher. The marriage ceremony was performed by W. F. Williams of Waterville. The Fletcher's came west by ox team to Oregon and first settled in the Willamette Valley, later moving to a point near the present village of Withrow, north of Waterville. In 1891 D. L. Gillespie moved to Chelan Falls and was postmaster, ferryman and operated a livery business. In 1897, D. L. and his brother Albert opened a general store at Brewster, the first store in this city, as most of the business was then called Virginia City, one half mile south of Brewster. In 1898 D. L. Gillespie received the appointment as postmaster at Brewster. He had worked hard for the establishment of the post office here. this putting three offices within three or four miles of each other. Virginia City opposed anything for Brewster. Later the Columbia-Okanogan steamboat company moved their wharf to Brewster and finally this city stared to thrive and business houses were moved northward to new locations and a part of Brewster. Under D. L. Gillespie's management the Brewster Herald faced the ups and downs of newspaper life. The foundation of the city was being laid. Brewster was the distribution point for Okanogan county. Long strings of freight teams pulled loaded wagons up the dusty roads. The Herald fought for the good things and opposed the bad. The paper plant was twice burned to the ground, having been in the path of the flames. D. L. Gillespie did not miss an issue of the Herald in thirty-two years, the two fires only kindled the determination. Mr. Gillespie had set his stakes here and here he toiled at the game of life. To see Brewster and Okanogan county go ahead was his goal. The Herald, under D. L. Gillespie's management, was a strong republican paper. He was first and last for American ideals. He was a bitter enemy to any party that did not believe in American government. He served as Police Judge and Justice of the Peace at Brewster for nearly 35 years. Anyone who believed in the up building of the city and the upholding of the constitution of the United States, 100 per cent, was a friend of D. L. Gillespie. He believed in one flag, the Stars and Stripes. During the World War he took a most active part in Liberty Loan drives and urged that his three sons of age enlist for their country. He was one of the pioneers that came west and fought for freedom. He early learned the Indian language and was the go-between n many near battles of the early settlers and the red men. He was a friend to all and served often in giving advice to those in trouble. He is survived by his widow, Esther E., a mother Catherine Snow of Seattle, four sons, Harry A., Merle E., Claude D., and Loris A., besides several grandchildren. A daughter, Mildred E., passed away in November 1928.
