Woods, an early settler of Howard county, and one of the best known farmers of the Loup country, died very suddenly at Dannebrog Saturday afternoon, October 19. In a spirit of fun, which was a strong characteristic, he had just played a game of ten pins. It was the first time he had ever bowled and he complained of feeling exhausted. He started for the open air and fell just as he reached the door, expiring instantly. Apoplexy is supposed to have been the cause of his death. Mr. Woods was born in Bigna (sic) county, Ohio, October 17, 1841, being 63 years and 12 days old. At an early age he removed with his parents to DeWitt county, Illinois, from which place he enlisted in the union army and served four years in the war of the rebellion. May 9, 1864 he was married to Miss Anna emery, the union being blessed by nine children, five of whom are now living. These are Charles R. Woods of Abbott, Hall county, Mrs. Dixon of McCook and O. A. Woods, and Mrs. McCroskey and Mrs. Hosier of Dannebrog. In 1868 Mr. Woods removed his family to Carroll county, Missouri where he resided until 1883, when they settled on the farm in Cleveland precinct, which he has since occupied. In 1892 he joined the United Brethren church. He was also a member of the Ancient Order of United Workmen. The funeral was held at the Danish Lutheran church in Dannebrog Tuesday morning at 10 o’clock under the auspices of the A.O.U.W., Rev. J. C. Pedersen officiating. A large number of friends from all parts of the county were present and followed the remains to their last resting place in the Dannebrog cemetery. “Dave” Woods was a man of strong convictions and great moral courage. For many years the editor of this paper had enjoyed his intimate friendship and valued it highly. About four years ago his health began to fail and considerable apprehension was felt for him, but a trip to his old home in Missouri seemed to restore him completely and his appearance is said to have been hale and hearty up to the hour of his death. In the loss of Mr. Woods, the family is deprived of a devoted husband and father, the community of a loyal friend and neighbor and the country at large of an ideal citizen.
