Dave's life ended in a grain bin accident on the farm when he was 26 years old. In Loving Memory Of David Mathre Biederman August 14, 1958 to September 25, 1984 David Mathre Biederman was born during a thunderstorm at Osage, Iowa on August 14, 1958. He was the son of Robert and Jean Biederman, joining siblings Jane and Philip. At age 3, Dave picked wild raspberries into his baseball cap, then sat on a log to eat them. Each fall the Mitchell County Historical Society had a day-long tour of interesting sites in the county. When Dave was 5 he spent the day touring historic sites. The next year, he took in the morning activities but had to attend kindergarten in the afternoon. These tours sparked his avid interest in history. Once, when given a task he didn't like, Dave questioned whether his mother understood boys because 'if you REALLY understood boys, you wouldn't ask them to do something against their will.' Dave didn't start kindergarten until age 6 due to his summer birthday. He enjoyed helping his dad around the farm so the "extra" year passed quickly. Dave attended elementary school in Mitchell, Iowa and graduated from Osage Community High School in 1977. He was confirmed at First United Methodist Church in Osage in 1973. Dave was active in 4-H and high school FFA. His FFA Farm Business Management Team placed first in state competition and advanced to national. He attended Iowa State University. In 1977, ISU played U of I in football for the first time in years and Dave attended the game in Iowa City only to see ISU lose 12 to 10. Dave and his brother Phil left their studies at ISU and returned to the farm when their father was diagnosed with a brain tumor in August 1978 and died in March 1979. Phil and Dave fed cattle, raised hogs and grew corn, soybeans, oats and alfalfa. They also did custom chopping and silo filling. Once they were asked to harvest a neighbor's sunflower crop. They had never even seen sunflowers except as a nuisance weed but they took on the challenge. Afterward they had to clean every single seed from the combine so there wouldn't be any sunflowers in their fields. Dave returned to "the college" for winter quarter in 1981 while Phil farmed. Dave was active in ag night school, the Methodist church, farm organizations, the Democratic party, and the Mitchell County Historical Society, often serving as an officer or committee member. The farming partnership ended when Dave died in a farm accident in September of 1984. He was survived by his mother, his brother, Philip, his sister, Jane (Ken) Odland, his grandfathers, Severt Mathre and Clarence Biederman and many relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his father, and his grandmothers, Mary Smith Mathre and Florence Adams Biederman. Published in Des Moines Register on Aug. 14, 2014
