Born May 3, 1947, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Paul Clinton and Goldie Christine (Rice) Brotemarkle. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Margaret Brooks, and a brother, Robert Brotemarkle. David, and his wife, JoAnn, were past owners of a number of businesses in Cumberland, LaVale, and Hagerstown. He was best known for the Brotemarkle's family business of a catalog showroom, Goldsmit-Black, in LaVale. Mr. Brotemarkle belonged to a number of business and civic organizations over the years and was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church. He was also a member of the Cumberland Country Club. He was passionate about golf and loved to play the game. David was a Viet Nam veteran and was awarded the Bronze Star for his service. He felt it had been a privilege to serve his country and had a great appreciation for being able to live in the United States. He was a man who greatly loved and put his family and friends first. He is survived by his loving wife and best friend, JoAnn; his son, Aaron and wife Natalie, of Bel Air; grandchildren Kayla and Megan Brote-markle and Jake, Jesse, and Lacey Hartman; his daughter Kristi and husband Kip Perkins, of Nashville, Tenn; and grandchildren Chase and Chris Perkins. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and watching their accomplishments, whether big or small. He is also survived by his brother, Charles "Butch" Brotemarkle, of Cumberland, and a number of nieces and nephews. He leaves behind many dear friends in Cumberland, along with long-time friends, Larry and Tammy Sloan in Myrtle Beach. Friends will be received at the Upchurch Funeral Home, P.A., 202 Greene St., Cumberland, on Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. The funeral service will be conducted in the funeral home on Wednesday at 1 p.m. with Kip Perkins officiating. Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park where military honors will be accorded by Post 13 Veterans Honor Guard. Mr. Brotemarkle's golfing friends will serve as honorary pallbearers. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Allegany College of Maryland Foundation, 12401 Willowbrook Road, Cumberland, MD 21502, where a scholarship will be established in honor and memory of David.
