He came to America at the age of 20 years. He worked on a farm in Scott County for several years. David Paul was born July 5, 1845 in County Antrim, Ireland. He came to America at the age of 20 years. He worked on a farm in Scott County for several years. Later he moved to the Barrett community in Jasper County and on Dec 25, 1871 he was married to Isabel Parker and they lived together 26 years. She died on Dec 10, 1897. No children were born to this union. On Oct 11, 1899 he was married to Margaret H. Pickens in Newton, Iowa. They lived in Newton until 1907 when they moved to Grinnell, the present home. Two sons, Francis James and George Leland were born to this union. For years Mr. Paul has been in poor health. About three weeks ago he suffered a slight stroke of paralysis, his condition gradually grew worse and the end came peacefully o the morning of Jan. 28 at the age of 78 years, 6 months and 28 days. In his last illness he was tenderly cared for by his wife and children. Mr. Paul was a quiet, unassuming man and loyal and devoted friend. During residence in Grinnell he has been a member of the United Presbyterian Church and while in health was a regular attendant at the services and always a faithful supporter of the work. During his last illness he gave assurance of his peace with God. Among his favorite scripture passages were the 23rd and 46th Psalms. He was the last of a family of nine children. He leaves to mourn his loss his faithful wife and two devoted sons, other relatives and a wide circle of friends. Funeral services were held from the late home Wednesday at 2 p.m., conducted by the pastor, Rev W.W. Woodburn. Mrs. Woodburn and Mrs. C. C. Hutchison sang---"Through the Dark Valley" and "The Lord is My Shepherd." The attendance was very large. Internment was made at the Gilman Cemetery.
