David Paul Sonnenfelt was born Nov. 30, 1954, in Tilden. He was the son of Francis and Nina Mae Sonnenfelt. Dave lived in Puyallup, Wash., until the age of seven, at which time his mother passed away and his father moved the family back to Oakdale. Dave’s grandparents opened their heart and home up to the family and helped raise them. Dave graduated from Neligh-Oakdale High School in 1973. He then attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln for four years and studied journalism. He was employed at the Neligh News and Leader. He later moved his family to Creighton, where he became the editor of Creighton News for 30 years. Dave was active in the community and made many lifelong friends. He was a member of the Creighton Fire Department for over 30 years. He moved to Verdigre in 2009 due to failing health and to be near his sister, Julie. Dave had a true love for the outdoors — his most favorite was the sport of fishing with family and friends. He also had a love for dogs — most importantly his buddy, “Sam.” Dave was especially proud of his family and thought the world of his grandchildren. Dave is survived by his children, Kerri (Mitch) Kirby, JD (Jillian) Sonnenfelt, Jessily Sonnenfelt (fiancée Bret Gieselman); grandchildren Donavan and Kylie Kirby, Chase Sonnenfelt, Brantson, Dalton, Emmyrson and Charlotte Gieselman; siblings Mike (Kathy) Sonnenfelt, Steve (Glenda) Sonnenfelt, Julie (Jerry) Crauthers, Mark (Nancy) Sonnenfelt; aunt Mary Glass; uncle Stan (Mary Lou) Sonnenfelt; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, Francis and Nina Mae Sonnenfelt; grandparents Paul and Bea Sonnenfelt, Arthur and Julie Stott; and niece Angela Sonnenfelt. Dave will be remembered by those that truly knew him for his love of nature and desire to be along the river. He was a quiet man of few words. Dave will be greatly missed by all that knew him.
