Description	:	David Ray McAlister of Hemingway entered into eternal rest on Thursday, March 29, 2007 at East Cooper Regional Medical Center, Mount Pleasant after a long illness. Visitation will be on Saturday, March 31 from six until eight at Morris Funeral Home. A service celebrating the life of Ray McAlister will be held at the Hemingway First United Methodist Church on Sunday, April 1, 2007 at 3:30 with interment following in the Garden of Devotion. Mr. McAlister was born in Lake City on April 9, 1928, a son of the late Charles Betts McAlister, Sr. and Ludie Ward McAlister. He was married to Betty Sue Elliott McAlister for forty-eight years. He was graduated from Hemingway High School, Newberry College, and Appalachian State University where he received his Masters Degree. He was a member of the Phi Delta Fraternity. He served four years in the United States Navy during the Korean War. Mr. McAlister was an educator with emphasis on coaching and administration for thirty-four years. At Hemingway High School he coached football, basketball, baseball, and golf achieving statewide recognition. He also served as Middle School Principal and Elementary School Principal at Johnsonville District Five Schools. He was a dedicated member of the Heminway United Methodist Church and served there in many capacities. He was also a trustee of the Garden City Chapel. An avid golfer, he was on the founding board of the Wellman Golf and Country Club. For many years he represented Williamsburg County on the Pee Dee Tourism Commission. Surviving in addition to his wife is a daughter Martha (Marti) Mullen and her husband, Dr. Shaughnessy Von Mullen, a granddaughter Mary Carter Mullen; two brothers, Joe McAlister of Georgetown and Charles Betts (Sissie) McAlister, Jr. of Hemingway; two sisters, Sybil (Jack) McClary of Kingstree and Mavis Brown of Hemingway; one sister-in-law Carolyn McAlister of Garden City Beach. He was predeceased in death by two sisters, Travis McAlister and Blanch Reddish, and two brothers, Billy John McAlister and Therrell McAlister. Mr. McAlister leaves behind a legacy of being, first and foremost a devoted husband, father and grandfather, a successful educator, a devoted man of the church and a man of unrivaled principle. ]
