Clark, which was held at the Presbyterian church last Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock and it is safe to say that Calistoga was there to pay its last loving tribute to the first Calistoga son to give up his life while in the service of Uncle Sam. The church was packed to the doors, many, many people having to stand through the entire impressive service. No one thought of the rain and apparently no one stayed away for it. Everyone came to show their love and respect for the dead and their love and sympathy for the near and dear ones who must travel the red of the road through life without it him. All, without exception, were bowed with grief. Softly Nearer, My God, to Thee was played by I.C. Adams, violin, C.H. French, clarinet, and Mrs. C.A. Carroll, organ, then the music of these instruments was augmented by Mrs. G.H. Short, soprano, H.L. Gibbs, bass, and Mrs. Carroll, tenor. This was followed by the bugle call, To the Colors, by F.S. Crouch. One verse of America was then sung by the choir, accompanied by the orchestra. After the Scripture rending and prayer the choir sang Jesus, Lover of My Soul, after which the bugle call, Reveille, was sounded by Mr. Crouch. Rev. J. Sherman Potter gave an eloquent address, full of sympathy and love but with a ring of patriotism that was suitable for the last words to be uttered over a soldier's bier. Mrs. G.H. Short sang Rest in the Lord in her usual sweet manner, and her voice showed the deep sympathy she felt. The benediction closed the unusually sorrowful service. It is safe to say that handsomer, more magnificent floral pieces never were in Calistoga. The largest one was an American flag of red white and blue flowers on a beautiful background of green, and was the gift of some of the business men and boys about town. Not withstanding the heavy rain many friends followed the remains to the Calistoga cemetery, where they were laid to rest with a short but impressive ceremony. Without a doubt the sorrowing relatives have the heartfelt sympathy of every man, woman and child in Calistoga and no one is more sincere than The Calistogian and its entire force. David Clark was the eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. S.B. Clark of Franz valley, just over the line in Sonoma county, and was an industrious young man of exemplary habits. He had hosts of friends and no enemies among his acquaintances. He was a native of this State and was aged 28 years, 8 months and 21 days. He died at the army camp at Waco, Tex., of an attack of pneumonia following illness from measles. The young man passed away on February 5th and his body arrived here on the day of the funeral.
