OBITUARY THE CHARITON LEADER Chariton, Iowa September 9, 1915 PASSING OF DAVID S. WRIGHT David S. Wright was born December 19, 1828 in Hamilton County, Ohio. His father, Joy Wright, was a native of the state of Delaware. For the first few years of his life, David S. Wright lived with his parents in Cincinnati, Ohio. In 1833 his parents moved into the state of Kentucky where they resided most of the time until the spring of 1841. In that year the family moved to St. Louis, Mo. where they remained until the summer of 1842. Another move in that year brought them to Davenport, Iowa. Farming and working on a river boat and going to school occupied the time of D.S. Wright for the next eight years. In the spring of 1852 he began farming for himself. On November 4th of that year he married Miss Mary A. Roseman and the next spring with his wife and a few household goods he removed to Muscatine County, Iowa, where they lived for four years. There the two oldest children were born. In the fall of 1856, D.S. Wright came out to Lucas County, Iowa then but thinly settled and purchased two 40 acre tracts of wild land with no improvements whatever except about twelve acres of breaking had been done on the tract in Cedar Township. The other tract of 40 acres was located in Pleasant Township and was what was called timber land. In March, 1859, D.S.Wright with his wife and two children moved to Lucas County to take possession of their land purchases. They landed without mishap by team and moved into a small pole or log house which belonged to a Mrs. Gale, near where the Baptist Church now stands. Mr. Wright soon began the erection of a log house upon his Cedar Township forty. Working upon the land, clearing and planting his crop he was not able to sufficiently finish his new log house suitable to live in until Sept. 7, 1859. On that date the family moved in their first Lucas County home which they could call their own. No windows or doors had been put in at this time but this was soon done and the family was soon comfortably housed for the winter. The family continued to make this log house their home until 1865 when the large and comfortable frame house was built which still stands upon the D.S. Wright farm in Cedar Township, Lucas County, Ia. Good health and prosperity blessed the family with the exception of the deaths of two of their children. The little clearing of twelve acres increased from year to year and 515 acres comprised the holdings of this pioneer family in 1890 when all the children had grown to young manhood and young womanhood and the parents felt they had well earned the right to retire from active farming. The last move of D.S. Wright was made in 1900 when he and his good wife retired from the farm and built themselves a comfortable home on North Grand street in Chariton. The D.S. Wright farm in 1890 was considered one of the best if not the best improved and equipped stock farms in Lucas County. Here in this Chariton home D.S. Wright and his wife lived and enjoyed the fruits of their labors. But on November 27, 1910, death took away his life companion with whom he had lived a little over 58 years. She was laid to rest in the Bethel cemetery. On February 24, 1912, D.S. Wright was again married to Mrs. Hettie May Bannister of Chariton, Iowa. To Mr. Wright and his first wife nine children were born, two of whom died in infancy. The survivors are Mrs. Laura Willey of Sheridan, Wyoming; Mrs. Allie Baxter, of Chariton; Mrs. Mary Goltry, Russell, Iowa; Mrs. Sarah Allen, Sheridan, Wyoming; Frank Wright, of Lucas County, Iowa; J.M. Wright of Russell, Iowa; and Mrs. Winifred Brundage of Sheridan, Wyoming. There are 34 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. For almost a year prior to his death which occured at his home in this city at 7:00 o'clock, he had been an intense sufferer from cancer, and this combined with an acute attack of kidney trouble, hastened his death. A short service was held at the home on Monday forenoon, after which his remains were taken to Bethel church, near his old home in Cedar Township, where appropriate services were held, conducted by Rev. Curtis and Rev. Cornford, and interment was made in the family plot beside his early companion. The pall bearers were six of his grandsons, stalwart young men, Wright Goltry, Carl Goltry, Stephen Wright, Lee Wright, Richard Wright and Ralph Wright.
