[David's son Daniel] THOMPSON, an enterprising farmer of Center Township, residing on section 1, is numbered among the honored pioneers of the county, having come with his parents to this place in 1854, when a lad of nine summers. He was born in Luzerne County, Pa. in 1845, and is the sixth in a family of sixteen children, whose parents were David and Fanny (Sprigle) Thompson. His father was a native of London, England, and when a babe of two years, in 1813, his parents started for the New World. A war with England was then in progress and the vessel in which they embarked was captured by privateers and they were forced to return home. Ten years later they again started for this country but once more disaster overtook them in the form of a shipwreck. However, Mr. Thompson, the grandfather of our subject had provided for an emergency like this and by his far-sightedness which caused him to bring a large amount of provisions, he saved the crew. At length the party reached America and took up their residence in Pennsylvania where David Thompson grew to manhood and wedded Miss Sprigle, a native of that State. Thinking to benefit his financial condition by a removal to the West he started with his family for Iowa and in 1854 took up his residence in West Union Township, Fayette County. Shortly afterwards he removed to Dover Township, where he opened up a farm continuing its cultivation until his death, which occurred in 1886." Note: One of the daughters of John Thompson, Ann, married John Garratt in Luzerne County inn 1820; therefore, even though the above bio says the family tried first in 1813 and then again 10 years later [est. 1823], it had to have been less than 10 years before they made the 2nd try. David's father, John Thompson died in 1844 in Covington, Luzerne, PA. His will, naming all of the children, can be read online. David was the youngest son of the family. A woman named Rebecca was named as the wife of John in 1844; whether or not she was the first wife, mother of all of the children, including David, is unknown. (H. H.), John S. and Daniel S., can be found in the "History of Fayette County Iowa..." All the family bio's say 1854 was the year David Thompson left PA and arrived in IA. A story relating to the death of David Thompson in 1885 also makes note of his son, Dan(iel) Thompson: Taken from the Fayette County IAGenweb: July 12, 1885 "Runaway Accident" "A serious accident, seeming almost a miracle that it terminated without the loss of life, occurred on last Sunday, July 5th. Mrs. C. C. Nefzger, in company with Miss Mary Hulverson, was returning in a buggy with single horse from the funeral of DAVID THOMPSON. They turned west from the Clermont road just this side of Mr. Mabb's farm, thinking there would be less dust. They had not driven more than forty rods when Mrs. Nefzger in looking back noticed a team coming at breakneck speed, having already broken loose from the conveyance they had been driven to. She did not see them in time to get out of the way entirely, although she whipped her horse and turned him out of the road thinking to give the runaways the entire track, but they were coming so fast that she could not get out of the way. One of the horses jumped into the back part of the carriage and the other over the wheel at the side, the first one getting his feet caught in the wheel and spring in such a way that he could not get loose. While in this condition both horses were exerting every nerve to get away. The entire top of the carriage was crushed over the head of Mrs. Nefzger, while her companion was shoved through the dashboard with the carriage top onto the back of their horse. Finally the horse at the side of the carriage broke loose from his mate and ran away. Mr. DAN THOMPSON being just in advance managed to control his team and tied them to the fence, and then returned to the assistance of Mrs. Nefzger, who finally succeeded in crawling out over the front end of her buggy to the ground. Mr. THOMPSON then helped her and her companion into his wagon and they reached home, both very badly bruised. The carriage was entirely demolished, every spoke in one wheel being broken out, both thills broken, the top, seat, and box being literally torn to pieces, and in fact, the entire vehicle was destroyed. We understand that the team was one owned by Mr. Asher Simer. One of them is an old runaway and the other a blind horse, that is also fond of a race sometimes. It seems that the team had been driven to the funeral by Mrs. Simer, her daughter, a couple of boys and several children, and that on their return the team became frightened and ran away. Several of the occupants of the wagon were jarred somewhat, but we do not know at this writing to what extent. Mrs. Nefzger is under the care of Dr. Darnall." [The administrator is related to David's older sister, Ann Thompson Garratt, FAG #52367736. She and another of David's sisters, Catherine Thompson Garratt, FAG #156903744 married Garratt brothers. Catherine's husband, Joseph Garratt, was a pioneer of industry in San Francisco after establishing a foundry there in the early 1850's.]
