Stuart, for many years a pioneer lawyer, teacher and man of affairs in the early days of the Colville country, died at St. Luke's Hospital in Spokane last Tuesday, December 3. Mr. Stuart was a native of Maryland, and came from aristocratic southern stock. He was appointed a cadet to the West Point Military Academy, but shortly before the time for graduation he became entangled in a plot to force the negro cadets from the institution and took his dismissal rather than suffer the humiliation of a reprimand. This was in the latter 60's, and being of a military turn of mind he enlisted regularly in the United Stats Army, expecting to win advancement by reason of his superior training in the arts of war. This brought him to Colville, where he took an honorable discharge at Fort Colville, married Miss Angeline Peone, daughter of the late Lous Peone, and settled in the Colville valley. While in the military service he studied law, and for many years followed the profession. In 1884 he was elected county superintendent of schools of Stevens County, but in 1885 resigned to accept the appointment of Deputy Collector of Customs for the district of Eastern Washington, in which position he served four years under Cleveland's first administration. After leaving the customs service he practiced law at Marcus for a time, but when the development of the Flathead country, in Montana, opened up he moved there and engaged in the law practice at Molson. About two years ago his wife died, and she was brought here to the place of her birth for burial. His deep grief over the loss of his wife seemed to have preyed on his mind to that extent that he gave up his work. He leaves three grown sons, William E., of Meteor, Washington; Virgil, of St. Mary's, Idaho, and Robert, of Molson, Washington. --The Colville Examiner, Dec 7, 1912
