Description	:	David Vance Coe was a Civil War Veteran. He was a member of GAR Post #82 that was organized in August 1881. He built the first hotel in Neligh, NE, which was opened March 5, 1874, with a dance. In 1856 he moved to Independence, IA. There was but one store there at that time. He engaged in farming till 1861, when he enlisted in Company C, Ninth Iowa Infantry, and served nine months. In 1870 he moved to Neligh, and took a homestead, which he improved and after sold. Mr. Neligh boarded with Mr. Coe during the time he was here laying out this town. Mr. Coe built a hotel here which he ran about six years. This house he still owns, known as the Commercial House. He was the first County Judge in Antelope County, and held this office about six years. The past two years he has been engaged in lumber. “Plot map from the cemetery shows that D. V. Coe was indeed buried at Greenwood Cemetery. The curator assured us their records show he is buried next to his daughter Vera Coe. There is, however, no headstone. Cemetery visited on September 22, 2014. ~ Great Great Granddaughter of David Vance Coe, “shellbeach77.”" Interesting that he doesn't have a headstone since there were several family members living there when he passed away. My father-in-law seems to remember seeing his great-grandfather's gravestone in Neligh, NE, though so mystery not quite solved. Linda Fox Coe
