David W. UTTS, Lyons' veteran tinsmith, was found dead in bed at his home at 1212 Washington street at an early hour Sunday April 13th. His death while a shock was not wholly unexpected, as a general decline mentally and physically had been plain for some time. He had simply slept away, without a struggle, painlessly and peacefully. His age was 76 years, 7 months and 6 days. D. W. Utts was born at Shippensburg, Cumberland county, Pennsylvania, Sept. 7, 1936 [sic - 1836], and there spent his earlier years, until the age of thirteen when he began learning the tinners trade at Belleville, Pa. In 1858 he came west to St. Anthony and Minneapolis, Minn., and a month or so later went to Sterling, Ill., there he worked at his trade until in 1861 upon the outbreak of the civil war, he enlisted in Co. B. 13th Illinois infantry. He saw service in the battles of Chicasaw Bayou, Arkansas Post, Jackson, Miss., took part in the siege of Vicksburg and participated in the grand assault of May 22, 1862. He marched over two thousand miles, was promoted to the rank of corporal for gallantry, and was honorably discharged June 18, 1864. He at once returned to Sterling, Ill., and worked at his trade until December, 1864 when he opened a photograph gallery and conducted that until May 1865, when he came to Lyons and entered the employ of the late G.W. Parker, as a tinner. He remained with him until December 1872. In January 1873 he engaged in the hardware business on Main street, until 1880, when he closed out his business and once more engaged in tinsmith work. From this he retired several years ago. Mr. Utts was married in 1867 to Miss Hattie Russell. She died in September 1876. In 1877 he was united in marriage to Miss Gertie M. Johnson who survives him. Three children of the first marriage survive. They are J.A. Utts, of Baltimore, Md., Mrs. J.H. White, Marceline, Mo., and Eugene R. of Clinton. Two children of the second marriage are Miss Cora Utts of Burlington, Iowa, and Verner Utts of Lyons. The deceased was a member of the Masonic fraternity and also of the Modern Woodmen of America. The funeral will be held from the home at 2:30 Wednesday afternoon. Rev. Fred P. Fisher will conduct the service. The interment will be in Oakland with the Masonic ritual at the grave by Lyons lodge No. 93, A. F. & A. M.
