Description	:	DAVID WELKER, 73, of Shreveport, La., and formerly of Roanoke, passed away Sunday, April 10, 2011, at Westwood Manor, Shreveport. He was a 1955 graduate of Roanoke High School. He set a county record for the 1955 Huntington County Basketball sectional by scoring 91 points. He served in the U.S. Army and was a member of the Eighth Army Baseball team in Seoul, Korea in 1958. Read More	DAVID WELKER, 73, of Shreveport, La., and formerly of Roanoke, passed away Sunday, April 10, 2011, at Westwood Manor, Shreveport. He was a 1955 graduate of Roanoke High School. He set a county record for the 1955 Huntington County Basketball sectional by scoring 91 points. He served in the U.S. Army and was a member of the Eighth Army Baseball team in Seoul, Korea in 1958. He attended spring training camp for the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1959. He is an alumni of Indiana University where he received a Bachelor's degree in business. He co-owned W.W. Gravel with his father and brothers, and then branched into the culvert business owning Hoosier Culverts. He coached the very successful W.W. Gravel Connie Mac baseball team. He was owner of the Fort Wayne Komets hockey team from 1987 to 1990, then worked in various entrepreneurial ventures including real estate. He was a member of several organizations including Scottish Rite and Shriners. He grew up in Seminary United Methodist Church, Roanoke. Born June 25, 1937, in Roanoke, he was the son of Robert and Ann (Branstrator) Welker. He is survived by a son William D. "Billy" (Tonya) Welker of Shreveport, La.; brother, Mark (Sally) Welker of Roanoke; sister-in-law, Jean Welker of Roanoke, two grandchildren, Anne Welker and Duncan Welker. He was preceded in death brother Phillip Welker. Service is 10 a.m. Thursday April 21, 2011, at Roanoke Memorial Chapel of Deal-Rice Funeral Home, with visitation one hour prior to service. Dick Bunnell officiating. Visitation also from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 20, 2011, at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Glenwood Cemetery. Preferred memorials are Allen County SPCA or Turnstone Center c/o Roanoke Memorial Chapel of Deal-Rice Funeral Home, 240 Crestwood Drive, Roanoke, IN 46783.
