Description	:	David was son of William and Bertha (Osborn) Wiltrout. His parents married 23 April 1840 in Oxford, Warren Co. NJ, and migrated to Iowa with the Osborn family. He was named after his maternal grandfather David Osborn. The family name is spelled alternately Wiltrout and Willtrout in the various official records, as was the Osborn/Osborne name. He was named after his maternal grandfather David Osborn. The family name is spelled alternately Wiltrout and Willtrout in the various official records, as was the Osborn/Osborne name. David was a Union Soldier in the Civil War, 29th Iowa Infantry, Company C. He enlisted under name David Wiltrout in Harrison County, IA, and mustered in at Camp Dodge, Council Bluffs, IA, 1 Dec 1862. The Unit went first to St. Louis to guard prisoners at Benton Barracks, then moved to Arkansas where they saw numerous skirmishes and fought in the Battle of Helena on July 4, 1863. From there they went to New Orleans, LA, to be sent to Brazos Santiago, Texas; then returned to New Orleans and mustered out 10 Aug 1865. The Army provided transport by steamer to Davenport, Iowa, where the Regiment disbanded and went home. The majority of casualities was from sickness due to the horrible conditions on the White River Expedition. David died of acute pneumonia combined with heart trouble after a duration of 6 days illness; aged 66 yrs. 5 mo. 3 days. He was working as a peddler at the time of his death; informant was son-in-law A.G. Moberly of Riverside. Burial 20 August 1910 at Swank Cemetery by undertaker D.A. Atusler(sp?) & Son. His obit is in the 26 Aug 1910 issue of the Lone Tree Reporter. --kscott Note: the death cert appears in error as David's military record says born New York ("Iowa Armed Forces Grave Registrations" at FamilySearch). One census says NY and two say NJ. We will go with NJ for now because his parents married in NJ.
