He attended Hampton Sydney College, and was associated with and a supporter of Virginia Tech. He was a veteran of World War II, having enlisted in the Army Air Force and attained the rank of Captain. DAVID WOODRUM FRANCIS PILOT-David Woodrum Francis, 85, passed away Monday night, February 17, 2003 at Montgomery Regional Hospital. He attended Hampton Sydney College, and was associated with and a supporter of Virginia Tech. He was a veteran of World War II, having enlisted in the Army Air Force and attained the rank of Captain. Upon release from service he was a salesman for Bell-Howe Corporation the following 17 years. During this time he served as a deacon in the Presbyterian Church. In 1973 he and his wife "Sunny" founded Serenity House, which he managed up until his death. His chief concern was the residents of Serenity House, so in 1983 he established Superior Church Furniture in order that his men would have steady employment, all this, as well as operating a 250-acre farm. He loved the outdoors, and one of his favorite sports was fishing. His ultimate dream was to offer sanctuary to as many of his fellowmen as possible. He was preceded in death by his wife, "Sunny," two brothers, Andrew Francis and Sam Francis, also two sisters. He is survived by: two daughters and husbands, Shannon and Harold Tate of Waynesboro, and Franciene and Charles Heartly of Newport, North Carolina; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He will be sadly missed by the men of Serenity House, as well as by special friends, Laura, Opal, Kevin and Shirley. Due to inclement weather, a memorial service will be held at a future date.
