Born in 1917, to parents Robert and Mabel (Pike) Wilkie. He lived in Lunenburg his entire life, except for a two year period in Louisbourg, where he set up the new National Sea Products plant in 1952. Wilkie 2001 Halifax Chronicle Herald (From the collection of Charlene Veinotte) Dawson R. "Dawsie" Wilkie, 83, died July 7, 2001, at home. Born in 1917, to parents Robert and Mabel (Pike) Wilkie. He lived in Lunenburg his entire life, except for a two year period in Louisbourg, where he set up the new National Sea Products plant in 1952. He served on the Town of Lunenburg Council for 23 years, of which many were as deputy mayor. He served many years as an engineer for the Lunenburg Fire Department and was granted a lifetime honourary membership. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Lunenburg, reaching the position of Grand Master. He was on the Board of Directors of Harbour View Haven and was instrumental in its start-up; member of the Bluenose Golf Club and Lunenburg Curling Club until this past year. His favourite pastimes were dancing, for which he was well admired; camping at Mason's Island with family and friends; sailing on the waters of Mahone Bay. To those who knew him well, he was a man of principals, sternness, intelligent, and earthly, while at the same time, loving, caring, and soft-hearted. A proud family man he will be missed by son, David, Bridgewater, family, Karen, Todd, Sean, and Ryan; foster son, George Hatt, Lunenburg, Darlene, Stephanie and Amanda; compnaion and long-time friend, Doris Ernst; half-brothers, Emerald and William Risser; half-sister, Diane Baker. He was "Great Papa" to Hannah, Kelsey, Kristina, and Noah. He has now joined his wife, Grace (Foley); mother, Mabel; sister, Vangie; half-brother, Roddie, all of whom were very close. Dad, on behalf of your remaining family, we say thank you, we are proud of you and admire you for your strength and the love you have given so selflessly. We will miss you, but we're at ease knowing you have done it your way. A private family graveside service will be held 2 p.m. today in Hillcrest Cemetery. A celebration of his life will follow by the family receiving friends and acquaintances at home, 202 Green Street, Lunenburg, at 2:30 p.m.Memorial donations may be made to the VON, Lunenburg Fire Department or Shaid Tree Animal Shelter.
