Miller was born in Harrisburg township, Van Buren county, Iowa, February 20, 1873, and died at his home in Bonaparte September 24, 1903, aged 30 years, 7 months and 4 days. His father, Chauncey O. Miller, died November 8, 1901, and his mother whom everyone calls "Aunt Polly" still lives at the home in Bonaparte whither they moved from the farm only a short time since. There were nine children in the family, six boys and three girls, of whom five are living,: Mrs. Mary J. Stevens, Robert H., Joseph J., and Norman W. of Harrisburg township, and George O. who lives in South Dakota. For many months "Date" has been ill but had strongly resisted death, at one time making a trip to the south-west hoping to benefit his health. All things possible were done by friends and physicians, but suddenly death came. On Thursday night about midnight he died in the arms of his mother. He united with the Harrisburg Baptist church November 5, 1893, and was a member at his death. The funeral services were held at the home on Sunday morning September 27 at 10 o'clock, Rev. J. L. Ayrault having charge. The service was heard by a large number of sympathizing friends and neighbors and by many relatives of the deceased young man, who had grown to love and respect him for his noble qualities of heart and mind. The long procession wended its way to the White cemetery where many friends were gathered and where there was a short burial service. The entire thirty years of Mr. Miller's life were spent in or near Bonaparte; he has mingled with the people in his daily life and there are none who have anything but good words for his memory. He wanted to live and expected to do so but was prepared to go from earth sustained and soothed by an unfaltering [sic] trust in God. The sorrowing family has the deepest sympathy of the entire community in their bereavement.
