He was born on Nov. 6, 1922, in Yale, Iowa, to Bert William and Violet Claussen McClatchey. He was born on Nov. 6, 1922, in Yale, Iowa, to Bert William and Violet Claussen McClatchey. He was preceded in death by an older sister, Irene Essenberg, and by his youngest daughter, Ann Elizabeth Moore, who died of pancreatic cancer on July 3, 2009. Dean and his wife Maxine (née Giefer, of Jewell, Iowa) were married on Dec. 18, 1943, and recently celebrated 66 years together. Dean served his country in World War II: after completing his aviation cadet training in Lubbock, Texas, he received his wings, and as a commissioned officer, became a B-24 flight instructor in Liberal, Kansas. After the war, he attended Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa, where he received his BS in Mechanical Engineering. While at Iowa State, Dean and Maxine became parents of their first child, Bruce Alan, in 1946. Three years later, Katherine Sue was born, while the couple was living in Texas, where Dean was employed by Magnolia Petroleum. In 1951, having had enough of West Texas (and of rattlesnakes, spiders, sandstorms, and the oil business), the young family moved to Fairfield, Iowa. Dean went to work in sales for Herman M. Brown Co., a heavy equipment distributor in Des Moines. Here in Fairfield a third child, Ann Elizabeth, was born on Nov 11, 1956. In 1962, the McClatcheys moved to Burlington, Iowa, where Dean joined the Raid Brothers Quarry business. This firm merged with Medusa Cement Company and in 1972 the family moved to Owensboro, KY, where Dean managed quarries in Kentucky and North Carolina. After he retired from Medusa, McClatchey purchased the Chance Construction Company in New Bern, NC, in 1979. Dean built the business into a very competitive and successful grading and paving company, with its own asphalt plant. In 1999, Dean sold the business to S.T.Wooten, which continues to operate it. McClatchey served on several Boards of Directors, including the Owensboro National Bank. He was also appointed by N.C. Gov. Jim Martin to the State Contractors' Licensing Board. He was a member of the Noon Rotary Club in New Bern, the Elks Lodge, the Masonic Lodge and the Shriners. Dean led a varied and active life. He owned a series of private airplanes which he used for business and pleasure, and was an avid hunter, fisherman, boater, golfer, photographer, and lover of all wildlife. He was a longtime member of the YMCA, where he regularly biked and lifted weights. In his last years he could be seen driving on the New Bern roads in a red Mini-Cooper, his little white Westie, Callie, riding shotgun. He left many friends and business associates as well as his beloved wife, Maxine. Dean also leaves behind his brother Jim, and his wife Marge McClatchey of Phoenix, Ariz., sister Doris Gerner of Kansas City, Mo.; son Bruce McClatchey, of San Francisco, Calif.; daughter Katherine Malsbary, her husband Gerald Malsbary of Gastonia, and their children Christine, Anna, Mary Willems, Jane Cross, and Theresa Cross; son-in-law Randy Moore of Evansville, Ind. (bereaved husband of Dean and Maxine's daughter Ann) and their children Erin Osmun, Meredith Kasenow, and Andrew Moore. There is also one great-granddaughter, Adi Cross (daughter of Jane and Andrew Cross), and many nieces and nephews. Dean and Maxine took their two daughters Ann and Katherine on a 10-day Mediterranean cruise in October 2008; the couple had lasting memories of spending a wonderful time with Ann before her death the following July. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that any gifts on Dean's behalf be made in the form of donations to Gilda's Club of Evansville, P.O. Box 5134, Evansville, IN 47716. This national organization, named after the actress Gilda Radnor, is dedicated to the support of cancer patients and their families. Ann McClatchey Moore and her surviving husband Randy Moore were instrumental in the founding of the Evansville chapter. Donations may also be made to the YMCA, the National Heart Association, the Cancer Society, to Garber Methodist Church or to the charity of your choice. A Memorial Service celebrating the life of Dean McClatchey will be held on Saturday, March 13, 2010, at 2:00 p.m., at Garber Methodist Church, 4201 Country Club Rd., New Bern, NC 28562.
