He died Thursday, Jan. 28, 2010, at Alpine Village in Verdigre. ——— Dean D. Custer was born on April 23, 1921, in Gross to William and Adeline (Wiley) Custer. He grew up in the Niobrara area. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1941. After proudly serving his country during World War II, he married the love of his life, Erlene Magdefrau, in San Diego, Calif., on Oct. 31, 1945. To this union five children were born, Jerre, Beverly, Pat, Perry and Kelly. Dean worked as a boilermaker, moving his family throughout the west and southern United States during his career. Upon retiring he moved back to his beloved state of Nebraska. Dean was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He is survived by his five children, Jerre (Carol) Custer of Linden, Wis., Beverly (Wayne) Kettler of Platteville, Wis., Pat (Doug) Schramm of Potosi, Wis., Perry (Kim) Custer of Platteville and Kelly Custer of Platteville; 16 grandchildren, 26 great- grandchildren, two great-grandchildren on the way; two brothers, Marlo of Verdigre and Gary of Niobrara, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Erlene; his parents, William and Adeline; a brother, Bill; a sister, Gladys; and one great-grandchild, Cadillac.
