Description	:	Dean Duane was born on October 17, 1925 to Henry and Esther (Tollefson) Mehlum in Madison, SD. He grew up in the Madison area, graduating from Madison Central High School in 1943. He was active in sports and music. He attended Augustana College in Sioux Falls for one year. He entered the Merchant Marines on May, 1944, taking his training at Sheepshead Bay in New York. He grew up in the Madison area, graduating from Madison Central High School in 1943. He was active in sports and music. He attended Augustana College in Sioux Falls for one year. He entered the Merchant Marines on May, 1944, taking his training at Sheepshead Bay in New York. During WWII he was the Captain's Server on the Army Transport, USAT Fred C. Ainsworth. He received an Honorable Discharge from the Army on October 8, 1945. Dean attended General Beadle College, Madison, SD, graduating with a BS degree in 1948. Dean met Janet Peterson at a dance at the Madison Armory. They were married in Fedora, SD, on October 24, 1947. They had sixty-seven happy years together. After college graduation, Dean taught school in Artesian, SD. He also coached basketball, football, and track for four years. He also directed the school plays. He then had a Curtis Candy route and later was a partner in a grocery store, the B and D, in Madison. Dean started working for John Morrell and Co. as a relief salesman, and then got his own route based out of Huron, SD, before moving to Sioux Falls in 1960 and was a salesman, and then a sales manager for about 40 years at Morrells. After retiring from Morrells, he sold for Holcomb Freightliner Trucks for a few years. His final job was selling and delivering golf carts for Midwest Golf Carts. He retired in the late nineties. Dean was always a "people person" and after retiring, he volunteered at the Center for Active Generations, helping fellow seniors earn their GED. Along with the Home Builder's Assn, he helped get a double car garage built for the Meals on Wheels trucks. He also played music for Daybreak's lap walkers and in the art room. When he wasn't volunteering, he enjoyed reading, yard work, gardening, playing music on his Bose, and traveling with his wife to see his family. One of his volunteer successes was coaching a junior high basketball team which went on to win a high school state basketball championship. Church was always a high priority for Dean. He taught Sunday school, was a deacon and elder at First Presbyterian church. He was very active with the men's group there and later at Hilltop United Methodist Church. His three daughters and later, his six grandchildren were his pride and joy. He spent time fishing, swimming, making lefse, and doing other activities with them. He also attended and enjoyed seeing every event they participated in, whether it was basketball, football, track, baton twirling, music performance or plays. A favorite every year was pheasant hunting in Fedora with his father-in-law, friends, and eventually his sons-in-law, grandchildren and even great-grandchildren. Those grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Janet, Sioux Falls; 3 daughters, Nancy VanderWaerdt, Rochester, MN, Jane (Steven) Uzzell, Norfolk, Ne, Marcy (Roger) Cook, Loveland, CO, and a special nephew, Mark Asper, formerly of Brush, CO; grandchildren are Gregg VanderWaerdt, Rochester, MN, Emily (Nathan)Uzzell Cropper, Akron, OH, Janell (Josh) Uzzell Feenstra, Norfolk, NE ,Benjamin (Stacie) Uzzell, Norfolk, Ne, Lance Cook, Rawlings, WY and Sean (Trista) Oshkosh, WI. Great grandchildren are: Ethan and Isaac VanderWaerdt, Courtney Cropper, Kailee and Micah Feenstra, Paige, Cole, Reese and Grace Uzzell, Isaiah and Zuri Cook. He was a member of Hilltop United Methodist Church, American Legion, CFAG. A volunteer to the end, Dean's final wish was that his body be donated to benefit medical education and research. He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Esther Mehlum, two sisters, Gwen Orton and Vi Olson, nephew Mark Asper, and other cousins, aunts, and uncles.
