Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 1 at Reck Funeral Home in Miller with the Rev. Brian Jones officiating. Burial was in G.A.R. Cemetery, Miller, directed by Reck Funeral Home. Dean Elwood Huisman, the son of Harry and Jennie (Braak) Huisman, was born January 28, 1917 in Miller, as his parents had just moved to Hand County from Worthing, S.D. The family settled on a farm in Glendale Township where he attended school. He worked in Miller as a mechanic for a short time and began farming with his brother, Ray, in the early 1940s. Dean married Elaine Gaudig on January 26, 1945. They continued to reside in Glendale Township and farm until his ability to get around forced him to enter Prairie Good Samaritan Center in Miller on June 1, 2005. Dean lived for his farming and shop work. Four hay movers and even a dragster evolved from his shop. The first two hay movers went up in smoke along with parts of Collins Slough. He did custom hay moving and combining until into the 1990s. Several neighborhood youngsters became "combine operators" under his guidance. His farming was a seven-day-a-week job but there was always time for hunting. The coffee pot was always on and there was always room at the table for more. All who knew him will miss his good humor and neighborliness. Dean is survived by his wife, Elaine; two daughters and a son, Diana (Bob) Tong, Bernie (Ginger) Huisman of Miller and Gloria (Dave) Myers of Ipswich; two grandsons, two granddaughters, three great-grandchildren; two sisters, Alice Johnson of Miller and Enid Nation of Pensacola, Fla. He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and seven sisters. The Miller Press April 04, 2006
