As a small boy he lived with his parents in Arkansas and Kansas for a period of years, returning to Nebraska at the age of nine. They made their home in Crete, where he grew to manhood. He worked for several years in Lincoln and in Idaho, where he joined the 347th machine gun battalion of the World War, October 18, 1917. Read More	SMITH, DEAN EVERETT—Dean Everett Smith was born October 18, 1889, near Milford, Neb. As a small boy he lived with his parents in Arkansas and Kansas for a period of years, returning to Nebraska at the age of nine. They made their home in Crete, where he grew to manhood. He worked for several years in Lincoln and in Idaho, where he joined the 347th machine gun battalion of the World War, October 18, 1917. He served his country for eighteen months, none being overseas. He was honorably discharged may 8, 1919, and returned home to join his parents, who then lived in Geneva. In 1924 they moved to Crete. He was active in the business life of that city for ten years. In September, 1933, he was injured in a motor accident and for eighteen months was a brave sufferer. Death came as a relief to his broken body at 9:27 p .m. March 23, 1935. He died at the Veterans hospital at Lincoln, Neb., aged 45 years, 5 months and 5 days. He was married August 23, 1920 to Ethel Merrill at Seward, Neb. To their home were born two sons, William Dean and James Carroll. Dean Smith was baptized and confirmed in the Trinity Episcopal church, Geneva, and after moving to Crete he became junior warden of Trinity Memorial Episcopal church. He was a member of Crete post No. 147, American Legion, and the 40 and 8. He also belonged to Crete lodge No. 27, Ancient Free and Accepted Masons, and Crete lodge no. 27 of Odd Fellows. He gave generously of his time to a group of junior boy Scouts of which he was leader. He leaves to mourn his death his wife, two sons, his mother, Mrs. Cora M. Smith; one brother, Owen J. of Scottsbluff, and many other relatives and friends. His father and two brothers preceded him in death. The funeral service was held at the Methodist church at Crete at 1:30 p. m. Tuesday and was conducted by Rev. Harry Huntington of Fairbury, assisted by Rev. Leslie Moore of Crete, and Rev. Robert Mason of York. Interment was in the Geneva cemetery. The body was accompanied to Geneva by members of the family and other relatives and friends and by escorts from the Masonic lodge and American Legion of Crete. Geneva Masons, Legionnaires and Rebekah's attended the service at the cemetery. The Crete Masonic lodge conducted the service at the grave, and a Legion firing squad gave military honors.
