Cremation will take place under the direction of Croxford Funeral Home. A memorial service is 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 31, at Congregational United Church of Christ, 2900 Ninth Ave. S. Interment will be at Hillcrest Lawn Mausoleum privately prior to the service. Dean was born July 7, 1928, in Ekalaka, Mont., to Herbert and Florence (Lundstrom) Albert. He lost his mother when he was only 7 years old. Due to his loss, he always needed and gave a lot of love and had a very loving and caring way the rest of his life. He attended grade and high school in Ekalaka, graduating with honors. He graduated from the University of Montana in 1950 in business administration with a major in finance and a minor in accounting. He was honored by being named the outstanding business grad students of 1950. In 1946, Reserve Officer's Training Corps (ROTC) was required for freshmen and sophomores. Dean chose to continue the training for two more years, where upon graduation he was designated as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army Reserves. After graduation he worked one quarter for the Bureau of Business and Economic Research at the University of Montana. He became a certified public accountant in 1951. Dean graduated from the School of Banking at the University of Wisconsin in 1959, Graduate School of Bank Investments at the University of Illinois in 1976, post graduate of Banking University of Wisconsin in 1979. He held memberships in the Institute of CPAs, as well as the Montana CPAs. He was active in the Montana Bankers' Association and held offices therein. Dean became a staff accountant with Rowland Thomas & Company in Billings and Miles City in 1951. Dean began work at the First National Bank of Ekalaka. He later became a director and ultimately president of the bank. In 1967, Dean made a change and moved his family to Great Falls. He became vice president and comptroller of the Bank of Montana system, later he became vice president and chief investment officer for the 14 banks. He was a director of B of M Systems and was president of Eastside Bank. Dean retired in 1983. Dean had many memberships, including Ekalaka Lodge #120 A.F. & A.M. He served in many chairs and well as Master of the Lodge. He was an active member of many organizations in Ekalaka, serving on the school board and the Lions Club, which he joined in 1951. He continued with the club in Great Falls. Dean considered his fellow Lions as his closest friends. He was an active member in his church. Upon his retirement, he and his wife set up books for the Church Memorial Fund. He was active in making investments, which helped in the funding of major church improvements. His hobbies were coin collecting, he was a railroad buff and his real love was bike riding. He loved biking and especially the River's Edge Trail. He biked about 1,200 miles per year, going about 10 miles per day. At age 79, he had to slow down and gave his bike to the Boys and Girls Club. On June 15, 1951, he married Dorothy "Dotty" Pulse in Miles City. She was his best friend and she helped him on his many endeavors. His proudest achievement (besides his family), was being appointed by former Governor Tom Judge, to the original Montana Board of Investments when it began in Jan. 1973, and served until June 1981, the last four years of the appointment serving as chairman. The board set policies and procedures for years to come. Dotty drove for him while he did paperwork for BMS or the Investment Board. Dean will be dearly missed by his loving wife and family. He is survived by his wife, Dotty; daughters, Debi Maurer of Great Falls and Deanna Albert of Helena; granddaughter, Becki (Kevin) Minton of Wisconsin; two great-granddaughters, Emi and Paige; nieces and nephews; family of his sister, Ruth; and his brother, Rex. He was preceded in death by his parents; his stepmother, Erma; and his grandson, Daniel Dean Habel. Memorials may be made to the First Congregational Church of Great Falls or The Yellowstone Boys and Girls Ranch of Billings.
