Visitation begins at 12:00 PM Friday, Dec. 23 at the funeral home, where the family will greet friends from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM. Dean, the son of Marvin and Mary (Hoenscheid) Reif, was born April 3, 1933 in Salem, SD. He grew up there. Dean graduated from St. Mary’s High School in Salem. Dean then began his career as an engineer with Northwestern Bell Telephone. Dean was united in marriage with Dorothy Groves on September 5, 1953 in Manhatten, KS. The couple lived in Pierre, Lake Andes and Rapid City, SD before moving to Sioux Falls, SD in 1966. Dean retired in 1985 after 34 years of service with the telephone company. In retirement, he worked as a volunteer through the Telephone Pioneers installing Life-Line equipment. Dean’s family was the most important aspect of his life. He was devoted to his family and enjoyed countless hours spent with them at their cabin on Lake Madison. Following Dorothy’s death on March 25, 2001, the cabin was sold and Dean traveled extensively throughout the United States visiting relatives and friends. He enjoyed camping. Dean also loved to play cards and cribbage, both with his grandkids and at Active Generations. In addition to his wife, Dean was preceded in death by a son, Gary Reif, on April 29, 1999; a grandson, Michael Muth, on February 27, 1996; his parents, Marvin and Mary; and a sister, Shirley Breidenbach.
