He was born on Nov. 6, 1978, in Dubuque, son of David and Janaan (Manternach) Funke. He attended St. Francis Xavier School, and is a 1997 graduate of Beckman High School, Dyersville. He also was a graduate of Iowa State University, Ames, where he was a member of the Phi Sigma Pi Fraternity. He was a member of St. Francis Xavier Parish. Dean loved to watch and play football, he especially enjoyed watching the Iowa State Cyclones. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He was an amazing man with a big smile and an even bigger heart. He was loved by all that were blessed to know him and he will be greatly missed. Surviving are his parents, Dave and Janaan "Jan" Funke, of Dyersville; his fiancee, Kristi Goldsmith, of Kansas City, Mo.; two brothers, Douglas (Wendy Willenbring) Funke, of Manchester, and Daniel (Cindy) Funke, of Dyersville; two sisters, Debra (Paul) Engler, of Worthington, and Dawn Funke (and special friend, Adam Recker), of Cedar Falls; a special godchild, James David Engler; and his extended family, Charles and Mary Jo Goldsmith, of Dyersville, Matt Goldsmith, of Lakefield, Minn., and Brent Goldsmith, of Dyersville. A Dean M. Funke Memorial Fund has been established.
