Description	:	D. Wise Batten, of Estill, entered into Heavenly slumber October 18, 2008, following an extended illness. He was the son of the late D. W. Batten and Essie Peeples Batten. Mr. Batten was a graduate of Estill High School and for 50 years was General Manager of Lawton Oil Company, a Partner in Batten and Lawton and was a Founding Partner of Island Tire Co. on Hilton Head Island. Wise Batten, of Estill, entered into Heavenly slumber October 18, 2008, following an extended illness. He was the son of the late D. W. Batten and Essie Peeples Batten. Mr. Batten was a graduate of Estill High School and for 50 years was General Manager of Lawton Oil Company, a Partner in Batten and Lawton and was a Founding Partner of Island Tire Co. on Hilton Head Island. For all of his years, he was very much a part of the fiber of the town he loved dearly. A life-long member of Lawtonville Baptist Church, he taught Sunday School, was a member of the Board of Deacons and was Church Treasurer for 46 years. He was a Charter Member of the Estill Lions Club and in 1990 received its Outstanding Service Award. In the late 60's and 70's, Mr. Batten was a member of the Board of Education for Hampton County School District Two. Mr. Batten was a man surrounded by a grand, loving family and many wonderful friends. He was a gentleman of great character and substance and his unwavering faith was always at his center A loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and brother, he is survived by his wife of 68 years, Vera Gruber Batten; a daughter, Vivienne B. Richardson of Estill and Hilton Head Island; a son, Wise Henry Batten and wife Brenda (Peeples) of Estill; four grandchildren, Joseph Maner Bostick lll and wife Jody, Robert Batten Bostick and wife Lisa, Lee Elizabeth Batten, and Wise H. Batten, Jr. and wife Betsy; six great-grandchildren; his sister, Mary Frances B. Cone wife of G.E. Jr.; his sister-in-law, May G. Price; and a number of nieces and nephews. Mr. Batten was preceded in death by one great-grandchild and two brothers-in-law.
