Lucas were held Wednesday afternoon in Park Avenue church, the Rev. G. O. Bell officiating and interment was made in Prospect Hill cemetery. Pallbearers were: Robert Hunton, Joe Goldfien, A. W. McQuillan, G. D. Kulp, Al Mason and H. F. Wilde. Escort of honor, assisting the Legion men who bore the casket, was formed of old soldiers: L. B. Musselman, H. J. VanHorn, Herman Gerecke, James Rouse, James Grant and Capt. Craig. Dehart C. Lucas, was born in Illinois in 1837 and died at his home in Norfolk, Aug. 30. His parents moved to LaFayette, Ind., when he was quite young. Here he resided until he was 15 years of age. In 1853 he moved to Cedar Falls, Ia., where he lived until he was 21 years of age. He then moved to Cedar Rapids, Ia., where he was married to Malinda B. Coon. To this union three sons were born, Sanford, James and Ira. James died in 1894 at the age of 24. In 1862 Mr. Lucas enlisted in Company G. of the Twenty-fourth Iowa infantry. He was in thirteen battles and one siege. He was in the siege of Vicksburg and spent five days under intense fire. He was in many battles but among the most severe was the battle of Sabine Cross roads. Here he had five bullet holes through his clothing and his musket was shot from his hand, but in spite of severity of the fight he escaped injury. He and fourteen hundred others were captured at the battle of Cedar Creek, on the day of General Sheridan's notable ride. After the capture, he with others, were taken to the prison at Salisbury, N.C. Here he spent five months of awful prison life. When he entered the prison he weighed 180 pounds and the days after his release he weighed only 92 pounds. Thousands starved to death in the prison while he was there. Fortunatley he had a little money and a watch with which he managed to buy food enough to preserve life, He had many times said that the happiest moment of his life was when he reached the Union lines March 5, 1865. As soon as he was able to travel he was sent to St. Louis where he was discharged. He then returned to his home in Cedar Rapids, Ia. Immediately after his arrival home he was taken with a severe sick spell which came as a result of the exposure of the prison life. In 1868 he came to York county, Nebraska, and homesteaded on Lincoln creek before York county was organized. In 1889 he moved to Alliance, where he lived for ten years. In 1902 he moved to Norfolk, where he resided until his death. His wife preceded him in death seven years [ago]. In 1909 he and his wife were united with the Park Avenue church of Christ, in which church he continued his membership until his death. He had been confined to his home for the past six years and the greater portion of that time was spent in a wheel chair. In spite of this long period of confinement and suffering he was always cheerful, kind and hopeful. He is survived by two sons, Sanford and Ira and a number of other relatives."
