Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 16, 2004, at North Highland United Methodist Church, 620 15th Ave. N.E., Aberdeen, with Rev. Royal Archer officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens with military graveside rites being conducted by Sidney L. Smith American Legion Post #24 of Aberdeen. Delbert Monroe Kast was born Dec. 6, 1926, at Huron, S.D., to Queenie (Kast) and Ernest B. Kast. Ernest managed elevators at several communities before they settled in the Seneca, S.D., area when Delbert was 2 years old. Delbert attended school in Seneca, graduating from high school in 1944. In the fall of 1944 he and his sisters and brother moved to Minneapolis, Minn., to live with their mother. He attended McCalester College in St. Paul, Minn. In 1945 he was inducted into the United States Army and was stationed at Shemya Air Force Base in the Aleutian Islands. He was discharged in November of 1946 as a Quartermaster Corps Tech. 4. He received the Asiatic Theater Ribbon, Victory Ribbon, Good Conduct Ribbon and Merit Wreath Patch during his tour. After his discharge from the Army he attended the Minnesota School of Business in Minneapolis and the Beck Radio School. On March 6, 1948, he married Constance Reiter at the Edgewater Methodist Church in Minneapolis. They moved to the E.B. Kast farm south of Seneca and lived there for eight years before they moved onto their own farm four miles away. They farmed there for 32 years. In 1988 they retired and moved to Aberdeen, S.D. Delbert's greatest joy was spending time with his wife and family. Delbert and Connie enjoyed singing and performing in a band with Clifford and Marilyn Rusch during the 1950s. They loved dancing and spent many Saturday nights in their earlier years at dances with friends. In 1961 their two daughters were born. Delbert enjoyed attending his children's and grandchildren's activities. He loved the history of the old west, railroads, and enjoyed walking tours of historical areas and cemeteries. Delbert is survived by his wife of 56 years; his daughters: Laura (Larry) Hadrick of Aberdeen and Marie Ness and Merrell Ness Sr. of Aberdeen; grandchildren: Anthony (Brienne) Ness, Derek Hadrick, Emily Hadrick, Adrianne Ness and Merrell Ness Jr.; great-grandson: Meiko Ness, all of Aberdeen; two sisters: twin sister, Marilyn (Clifford) Rusch of Spearfish, S.D., and Geraldine Schaper of St. Louis Park, Minn.; one brother: Richard (Pat) Kast of Winterhaven, Fla., and numerous nieces and nephews. Delbert was preceded in death by his parents. Honorary casketbearers will be Merrell Ness II, Meiko Ness and the many friends in the Seneca, Lebanon and Gettysburg area. Active casketbearers will be four of his grandchildren: Anthony Ness, Derek Hadrick, Emily Hadrick, Adrianne Ness, Billy Potts of Gettysburg, Merrell Ness Sr., Thayne Wika of Aberdeen, and Neal Martinmaas of Sioux Falls. Ushers will be Cenah Wika and Krista Jones. Pianist is Joanne Deloy. Soloist is Don Rusch. Delbert will be dearly missed by his entire family. Published in the Aberdeen News on 11/14/2004.
