Description	:	Dell Orpha Hull Smith was born Oct. 3rd, 1916. She was the twelfth child of thirteen born to Emmet and Matilda (Delany) Hull. Dell was born in Boyd County, NE near a little village called Baker. NE southeast of Fairfax, SD. When Dell was two years old she moved with her family to a farm northeast of Gregory. She was the twelfth child of thirteen born to Emmet and Matilda (Delany) Hull. Dell was born in Boyd County, NE near a little village called Baker. NE southeast of Fairfax, SD. When Dell was two years old she moved with her family to a farm northeast of Gregory. She attended the Lopour School all eight years and graduated from Gregory High School in 1935. On Sept. 12 1937 she married Allen Smith in the Methodist Church at Winner, SD. They lived on several farms around Gregory until Dell's parents were unable to continue farming their land. Allen and Dell bought her parent's farm and an adjoining farm where her parents moved. Dell moved back to the farm where she had spent most of her childhood. The Hull house was later moved about one-half mile southeast of its original location to be near a good road, school, and her parents. She and Allen lived here until 1987 when Allen entered the nursing home and she moved to Gregory. Dell enjoyed her home in town with its big yard with plenty of room for a garden and lots of flowers. She loved growing vegetables and canning them for her family. Another love of hers was baking cookies for her loved ones. Every year at Christmas her kids, the grandkids who had left home, and others fortunate to be on her list received a garbage bag full of packaged cookies and bars ready for the freezer. At holidays we always left with enough leftovers for several meals. Her pies were special. They were never cut into more than four pieces. The most lasting legacy that she left us beside her love was the four family history books she wrote and published with the help of her sister Mary Christensen. Although Dell had accepted Jesus as her Savior many years ago she had never been baptized. It was her great desire to do so. So on August 22, 1999 at the age of 83 she marched into the Missouri River with son Gerald and grandson Geoffrey at her side to follow her Lord's example in baptism. Dell entered the Rosebud Country Care Center February 2, 2005 and passed away there on March 11, 2009. She was preceded in death by her husband Allen , daughter Kathleen, parents, grandson Emmett Jay Smith, and five brothers: George, Clarence, Brian, Frank, and John Hull and seven sisters: Dilas Clayton, Matilda Hull, Julia Baney, Catherine Stroup, Mary Christensen, Laura Harrison Mitchell, and Caroline Stickney.
