Born May 6, 1939, in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Eugene and Viola H. Ray. He served in the U.S. Army from 1962 to 1964. He was employed at Wando Furniture and Georgia Pacific for many years and then retired from Shaw Air Force Base as a housing maintenance supervisor of the 20th Civil Engineering Squadron.
