Description	:	Delmer E. Boyd, age 83, of Mitchell, SD (formerly of Huron) died Monday, November 28, 2011 at Avera Queen of Peace Hospital. Delmer Eugene Boyd was born July 17, 1928 at Carpenter, SD to W. Leslie and Iva (Shead) Boyd. He attended his freshman year at Willow Lake High School. Read More	Delmer E. Boyd, age 83, of Mitchell, SD (formerly of Huron) died Monday, November 28, 2011 at Avera Queen of Peace Hospital. Delmer Eugene Boyd was born July 17, 1928 at Carpenter, SD to W. Leslie and Iva (Shead) Boyd. He attended his freshman year at Willow Lake High School. He moved with his parents to Huron, in 1944, enrolling in Huron Senior High School, as a sophomore and graduated this school in 1947. On November 13, 1948, he married Mary Alice Fenner, at her parents' home, southwest of Iroquois.Upon graduation, he worked for a short time, for Beadle Electric, installing utility poles for the coming of electric power to Huron & rural community. In December, 1947 through local contacts, he became employed at Huron's home owned Farmers & Merchant Bank, where he spent 36 years before losing this job to reorganization by a new owner. His latter years at this job, was involved in management Delmer was inducted into military service in 1952, and he chose to join the Marine Corps, so was shipped to San Diego, CA. On May 16, 1953, their first daughter was born. In August, 1953, Delmer, along with the entire 3rd Marine Division, was shipped to Japan, as North Korea was threatening war beyond South Korea. Second daugther, Kathy was born August 5, 1958. In January, 1954, Delmer was included in a group of Marines whose enlistment duty was nearing end. Back in San Francisco, he was given an honorable discharge with rank of Corporal. He worked for Magness Livestock for a short time, and in late 1985, he took a job sponsored by the Green Thumb organization, working at Huron College, in their print shop and bookstore. In late 1991, he retired, and in 1992, they sold their Huron home and moved to Mitchell, and they tried apartment living. In 1994, they purchased a small home in north Mitchell, so Darleen could pursue her ceramic hobby/business. Delmer remodeled this home's basement to accommodate her ceramics and she continued to make beautiful pieces and taught classes to many area women. They lived that life style until 2002, they moved, again, into a similar apartment life style, with security protection. After celebrating 31 years of marriage, Mary died November 29, 1979. On July 17, 1980, he met Darleen (Cummings) Meier, and on January 3, 1981, they were married. Delmer completed most of his community service involvement in the Huron area. He joined the First Baptist Church and was baptized therein by emersion. While there, he joined the church choir and the BYF. When he and Mary were married, they transferred membership into the First United Methodist Church. He joined the church choir and had sung there for 28 years. He joined a bank affiliated audit organization and took many college credits coursed in bank courses during his career in banking. He was given a life membership in PTA as he had been president of the organization at the school where their daughter was enrolled: and he became president of the Huron City PTA Council. He was a member of James River IOOF Lodge and held all offices within that organization. He became a member of the United Commercial Travelers Association and held all offices therein. At the time of his death, he had been a member of American Legion which spanned 55+ years; and in March of 1955, he joined the Huron Noon Lions Club, transferring this membership to the Mitchell Lions Club in 1992, and had remained a member until time of his death ~55+ years. He served all offices, and had spent 45 years as club secretary between both clubs. In 2008, he was given a plaque designating him "Secretary Emeritus."Delmer was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Mitchell. Delmer took over the office of secretary of the SD Lions Foundation, 1992, to fill vacancy created by death of its' secretary, Bruce Brooks. He as elected Executive Secretary of the Foundation for one year, and became president of the Foundation Board of Directors for a year. He received many awards and recognitions through Lionism, (many as secretary): but his highest recognition came as a Melvin Jones Fellow, plus a second recognition of this designation. He also made it his priority to maintain 100% consecutive year perfect attendance of which he amassed nearly 55 years at the time of his death. Delmer attended District State, Multiple District from 1957 through 1998, and had attended 3 International Lions Conventions. Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Darleen (Meier) Boyd, Mitchell, SD; a daughter, Debra Kaye Henriksen, Spearfish, SD; three step-children, Robert (Linda) Meier, Cheyenne, WY, Sharon Krutsch, Sioux Falls, SD, Karon (Jon) Davis, Sioux Falls, SD; six grandchildren, several great grandchildren; a sister, E. Alene (Hurley) Johnson, Huron, SD. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary (Fenner) Boyd on November 29, 1979; a daughter, Kathy Boyd; his parents; three brothers, Cecil, Arthur, and Albert; two sisters, Myrtle and Verna; 7 brothers-in-laws; 6 sisters-in-law. Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Friday, December 2, 2011 at the First United Methodist Church in Mitchell with burial at 2:00 PM Friday at Riverside Cemetery in Huron, SD with military rites. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 PM Thursday at the Will Funeral Chapel with a prayer service beginning at 7:00 PM.
